Episode Summary

Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike telling Buffy she’s the one (brief scene of Spike’s cross-hugging), Buffy and Faith walk and talk about the raising of the SIT army, Anya’s big-bad can be any dead person it wants speech over the First morphing into dead body and Johnathan, Xander’s “Kidnapping” of Dawn and Dawn’s “shocking” reversal, Old woman talks to Buffy of the Scythe, Caleb breaks old woman’s neck, then goes for killing blow against Buffy, Angel’s punching Caleb, Buffy plants the scythe in Caleb’s gut, Angel and Buffy kiss as Spike and Buffy/the First watch.

Buffy and Angel continue the kiss then break off, almost out of breath. “Well, I guess that qualifies as happy to see me” Angel smiles. Buffy starts to ask him what he’s doing there, but first takes a moment to “bask”, then she asks him.

Angel hints that he’s heard about the trouble in Sunnydale as he goes and grabs a book/folder that he placed on a shelf earlier. Angel asks if it’s the First, the same one that tried to convince him to kill himself. Buffy says yes, but it’s gotten more ambitous by trying to raise an army.

Angel starts to say that the First failed once, it will again, but suddenly he’s batted aside, sent sliding across the floor into a stone pillar! Buffy stands wide eyed, still clutching the Scythe, as she stares at Caleb, who is bleeding a blackish blood from his eyes and mouth “Are you ready to finish this… BITCH?!?”

Opening Credits:

Nothing new. Taking Buffy by surprise, Caleb swings a large urn which hits Buffy hard, sending her reeling. A few more slaps drives Buffy back, stunned. “Ok, how many times do I have to kill you? Round figure?” Buffy asks him.

“You understand nothing” Caleb answers in a deeper, slightly demonic voice, as he throws the urn at Buffy and continues to get the upper hand, grabbing the scythe and, lifting Buffy above his head, pins her to the ceiling of the chaimber with it!

Buffy refuses to let go of the scythe though as she falls, managing to get in a few licks in on Caleb. “You stupid girl” Caleb says, struggling up from being kicked down “you’ll never stop me.

You don’t have the b…” But his sentence is cut short, as Buffy spins the scythe in a swirling ark, it’s blade singing through the air, and then it’s an upper cut to the… um… well, she swings up and under Caleb and… you get the picture.

Caleb looks down at the blade in his crotch as Buffy says “who does nowadays?”, then, continuing the upward thrust, Buffy lifts the blade completely through Caleb, and we hear the two halves fall to the ground with icky thuds.

“Ok, now I’m pissed! Where is he?!?” Angel says, getting up, still just a tad dazed, but pumped full of adreneline. Buffy looks at Caleb’s right side, then his left side “He had to split”, and after a second a laughing snort from Buffy at the goofyness of her pun.

Spike, with a look of distain on his face, still watches silently from the shadows, Buffy/the First in the background observing also. Angel goes and picks up the folder he brought as Buffy asks if it’s from a reliable source? “Not remotely” he answers.

Angel then pulls out an amulet (both the amulet and paperwork are given to him from Wolfram and Hart in Angel the Series), which makes Buffy comment that she has nothing that will go with it.

Angel says it’s very powerful and possibly very dangerous “Purifying power… clensing power… possibly scrubbing bubbles…” Angel isn’t sure what it is or how it works, but he knows it’s to be worn by a Champion, one with a soul, but more than human.

He says that he doesn’t nearly enough to risk her wearing it though, and “besides, you’ve got that real cool axe… thing.” Buffy asks Angel if he’s gonna be in this with her? He says yes, shoulder to shoulder.” From the shadows, Spike hears this and, hurt, turns and leaves up some stairs.

“No.” Buffy tells Angel. She says that she doesn’t want to risk Angel in this, that she needs him as a back-up line of defense if the First should manage to get out past Sunnydale.

Angel argues, but Buffy puts on her stern face and Angel folds: “OK, that’s one reason… what’s the other?” “There is no other” Buffy says as she exits the tomb, trying to avoid the subject. “Is it Spike?” Angel asks, saying he can smell him on her.

Buffy says that she hates the whole vampire scenting thing. “Is he your boyfriend?” Angel asks. Turning away, Buffy answers “Is that your business?” Angel follows her out into the graveyard, asking if she loves him, then apologizes for the questions because the news is a bit of a surprise.

Buffy tells Angel that Spike is different, he has a soul now. Angel starts brooding, getting a little bothered cause he’s no longer the “cool” one with the unique soul.

Buffy is shocked at him being such a baby, but he counters, saying he’s getting pushed aside for “captain peroxide.” “Are you gonna go all Dawson on me every time I have a boyfriend?” Buffy asks. “Ah HA! Boyfriend!” Angel caught her, but Buffy backtracks a little.

“He’s not, but… he is in my heart.” Angel mumbles that it won’t end well, but Buffy tries to remember the highlighs of their relationship, including the breakup and her killing him.

Buffy knows that her history with men isn’t the best, and that she’s not trying to picture grandchildren with Spike, but continues to say that amidst the insanity surrounding her, she’s slowly figuring something out. Buffy tries to explain to Angel that she is like cookie dough.

She’s not done baking, she’s not done being formed into the finished product. IF she should make it through all of this mess, then someday maybe she’ll be cookies.

“And then, you know, if I want someone to eat me… er… enjoy warm, delicious cookie me, that’s fine, that will be then, when I’m done.” Angel understands and starts to talk, thinking about what to say, but doesn’t want to continue with the awkward cookie analogy.

Buffy says she doesn’t want to think that far ahead, about a future with anyone. He then slips the amulet into Buffy’s hand as he slowly turns to leave, saying “I’d better get working on the second front… make sure I don’t have to use it.”

As he’s walking away, Buffy calls out to him, haulting him for just a second. “I do… sometimes… think that far ahead.” She tells her first love. “Sometimes is something…” he answers back. “It will be a long time coming… years, if ever.”

She says. “I ain’t gettin any younger” he quips back, then walks away, dissapearing into the night. Buffy watches him leave with a hint of sadness on her face.

The front door of the Summers home opens as Buffy tries to quietly enter, but she is immediately, silently surprised by Dawn, who stands in front of her at the foot of the stairs, a very angry look on her face. And with a “pop” Dawn kicks her lightly in the shin.

“Ow!” Buffy says. “Dumbass” Dawn answers. Sitting in the background, Xander looks awkward “Don’t look at me, this is a Summer’s thing.” Buffy looks at Xander for a second, then looks at Dawn who still has a pissed look on her face “if you get killed, I’m telling.”

Buffy enters the dining room where Giles, Anya, Xander, and Willow are. Willow asks if Buffy found out anything about the scythe. “It slices, dices, and makes julianne Preacher” Buffy quips, saying she cut Caleb in half.

All are excited as Xander makes a bad “there’s a party in my eye socket” joke, which grosses everyone out “Sometimes I shouldn’t say words.” Down in the basement, Spike is punching the crap out of a punching bag, working out his frustrations, when Buffy slowly comes down the stairs.

Spike immediately asks her how things went with Angel. Buffy asks if he used his Vampire scenting thing, but Spike says he saw them kissing. Buffy looks slightly ashamed or embarassed, saying it was just a hello, but Spike says that people don’t usually use their tounges to say hello.

Buffy says that it doesn’t matter, he’s gone. “oh, he just stopped by for a quickie then.” Spike answers. Buffy says she’s not in the mood for more jealous vampire crap, which makes Spike get in the jab “he wears lifts ya know.”

Buffy glances over at the punching bag and sees a drawing of Angel’s head taped to it, and she rolls her eyes, saying that one of those days she’s just gonna put the both of them in a room and let them wrestle it out.

Spike changes the subject and asks where the trinket is, the amulet that Angel gave Buffy. Buffy pulls it out of her pocket as Spike says it’s his. Buffy asks him how he reasons that out. Spike heard everything, how it goes to “someone with a soul, but more than human.”

That would be him and he holds out his hand for it. Buffy says that it’s volitale and dangerous. “You’ll need someone strong to bear it then” Spike answers, still holding out his hand. Thinking for a bit, looking a little concerned, Buffy says “Angel said the Amulet was meant to be worn by a champion.”

Spike’s demeanor instantly goes down-hill. He starts to look hurt, but Buffy approaches him and gently places the amulet in his hand, looking at him with meaning. “Faith still has my room” Buffy says, hinting to Spike, but he gets upset, saying that she can’t stay with him.

He can’t be bought off with shiny beads and sweetness. He’s not gonna be treated like that. Buffy is hurt, says she understands, and turns to leave. “Clearly you don’t, cause the whole having my pride thing was just a smokescreen!”

Spike says, darting in front of Buffy, cutting off her retreat. “I dunno what I would have done if you’d have gone up those stairs…” Spike smiles, and Buffy smiles back and caresses his cheek. The two lay on Spike’s cot, Spike’s arms holding Buffy while they rest.

Buffy stirs, then slowly gets up, deep in thought. She walks to the open air of the room, looks out of the upper window at the moon as the moonlight shines down upon her face.

From the shadows, the form of Caleb appears “Pretty, isn’t it?” “You’re not him” Buffy looks at him calmly, knowing she’s addressing the First. Caleb/the First says that Buffy killed his good right arm, but he’s not worried, he has an army.

Buffy counters, saying mockingly “an army of vampires… however will I fight…” Caleb verbally spars back, saying that her army is a bunch of pimply-faced teens. Buffy spars back, saying that he needs a new cool name like ‘the taunter’, not being able to do much while incorporeal.

Caleb/the First wonders why she’s pretending to be so calm when she’s already up and not in the arms of her dead lover? He goes on to say that he will be corporeal when his army’s outnumber the humans on the planet, and nobody’s gonna be able to stop him, not Faith nor her friends nor the Slayer brigade.

The SIT’s are powerless unless she’s dead to pass the power to one of them. Caleb then says to Buffy that she knows the drill, and morphs into Buffy’s mirror image (same clothes and everything) and Buffy/the First starts the familiar “Into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world.

She alone will have the strength to… There’s that word again… what you are, how you’ll die. Alone.” Buffy stands silently, facing the First, as if thinking of something, her mind elsewhere. “Where’s your snappy comeback?” the First asks.

After a few more silent moments, Buffy answers “You’re right.” “Hmm, not you’re best.” the First comments. Just then Spike awakes from a nighmare of some sort, mumbling that he’s drowning and he’s all wet.

He awakes, a little disoriented, then sees Buffy standing alone in the room and he asks her if something’s wrong. “No… ye.. yeah… I just realized something; something that really never occured to me. We’re gonna win.” Commercial Break: The reality show that breaks all the barriers!

Constestants from American Idol are forced to live with each other in a winnebago with the cops in hot pursuit, next on “When Idiocy Attacks!” “Whaddya think?” Buffy, holding the scythe firmly in hand, addresses Giles, Xander, Anya, Faith, Dawn, and Willow about her new, unheard-of-by-the-audience plan.

Xander is beyond belief. Faith says that it’s pretty radical. Giles rises in confusion “It’s a lot more than that… Buffy, what you said, it flies in the face of every thing, every generation has ever done.

I think it’s bloody brilliant!” Buffy asks if he means it. Giles says if she wants him to. The both of them share smiling glances, knowing they have each other’s respect again.

Willow now speaks up, in typical flustered Willow-ese, saying that her part of the plan is going to require magics stronger than anything she’s ever done before, saying it’s a total loss of control, comparing it to experiencing her girlfriend’s tounge stud.

Buffy says that she wouldn’t have asked Willow if she didn’t think she could do it. Giles also lends his support, saying she’s strong enough to control it. Just then Dawn goes “Oh! Tounge stud…” and nods understanding, which makes Buffy hint that Dawn should go and do some research.

Dawn the “Jr. Watcher” leaves, with Giles following. Anya and Xander go out to assemble the “cannon fodder” as Anya calls them (but not to their faces), leaving Willow and Buffy alone. Buffy slowly hands the scythe to Willow, and a serious glance is shared between them.

Buffy is once again downstairs, addressing the troops. Everyone is assembled, including the SIT’s, scoobies, Faith, Andrew, Wood, and Spike (24 extra SIT’s is what I count… could be more).

Buffy says that she hates the whole situation, that they have to be there, that there’s evil, that she was chosen to fight it. She says she wishes she wasn’t chosen, and that she knows a lot of them wish she hadn’t been chosen either, but now is not the time for wishes, it’s now about choices.

Buffy says she believes she can defeat this evil, and that tomorrow she’s going to open the hellmouth and they’re going to do battle.

Buffy then says she knows that they’re wondering what makes things different this time, with them not having the power that she and Faith do “So here’s the part where you make a choice…” Cut to Faith and Wood in the school, pushing boxes and filing cabinets, setting up a barricade.

Wood comments that Buffy’s plan is out there, but good. He then says that they just have to work on blocking access to the sewers should the Ubervamps get out. Faith says that’s if they get past them, then quips “come on, gotta have a little faith.” “i think I’ve had my share, thanks.”

Faith apologizes in her own way for “blowing Wood off” after their little roll in the hay, but she was just trying to blow him off. Robin says he pretty much figured that one out all by himself. Faith explains that’s just the way she is, not wanting to get talky with a guy after getting bouncy with him.

Robin calls that weak, but at least it’s not “some of that isolationist Slayer crap” he’s gotten used to before. Robin then tries to defend men to her, saying that there are nice guys out there. Faith says that when guys see her, their priorities shift, because she’s so hot.

Robin sasses back, saying he’s so much prettier than she is, and that their little night together wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t all that great. Faith is surprised and offensive, saying she was great, but Robin says that while she was very enthused, it didn’t change his world.

She’s had enough and wants a re-match, starting to undo her belt and pants before Robin stops her, saying he wants to make her a deal: if they live through this, he’ll want a chance to surprise her. Faith buckles up and agrees to the deal, then adds “there’s no way you’re prettier than me.”

“Little bit, yeah…” Robin counters. Kennedy lays on Willow’s bed trying to relax as Willow sits up, a nervous wreck, pouring over spell-like papers and notes. Kennedy says what Buffy said is true, she’s stronger than she thinks.

Willow doesn’t agree, but Kennedy says that she’ll be with her to keep her grounded. Willow then says she might have to keep her stabbed-ed, to keep her from going to the “bad place.” Kennedy rises in disbelief, wondering if Willow is serious.

“The darkest place I’ve ever been… this is what lies beyond that…” Willow says, which makes Kennedy question why Buffy believes in her so strongly. Willow chalks it up to Buffy being brave and strong, but not that bright.

Kennedy says that she’s the first one to call out Buffy’s faults, but in this case she’s right, Willow has the power and she’ll do fine, no matter how dark it gets. The two share a tender kiss before Willow breaks it off, going back to her work.

Giles and Xander are in the dining room at night, pouring over battle plans. Giles questions where Xander is on the map, then after some discussion Giles goes through the door… The camera pans over to see Andrew and Amanda also at the table, with Andrew in a red hood.

“You go through the door and are confronted by the Troglor the Burninator.” Giles decides to “fight” the evil and rolls a dice. Unfortunately Troglor badly wounds Giles’ character and Giles complains about his Bag of Illusions not working against the evil.

Yes, they’re playing Dungeons and Dragons, and Amanda saves the group of adventurers by having her sorcerer cast a time pause spell and it traps Troglor! “I used to be a highly respected Watcher, now I’m a wounded dwarf with the mystical strength of a doily.”

complains Giles as Amanda wonders who on Earth could sleep on a night like that. “Only the crazy ones” comments Xander as the camera pans down to show Anya, sleeping on the end of the dining room table, head in sleepyland. Xander lovingly scritches her head.

Buffy stands alone, her thoughts to herself, leaning on a beam on the outer porch in the night-time summer air. Spike sits downstairs on his cot, dangling the amulet out in front of him, looking at it with just a hint of wonder, when he sees Buffy slowly coming down the stairs.

Spike rises and stands at his bed. Wordlessly Buffy stands at the foot of the stairs and faces him. An empty school bus, blowing papers, and the camera pulls up to the new Sunnydale High, now completely deserted. But in march the troops!

Wood and faith in the lead, followed by the assorted scoobies, then the SIT’s. At least 30 people in the group march up towards the main doors of the High school. “Welcome to Sunnydale high.

There’s no running in the halls, no yelling, no gum chewing, apart from that, there’s only one rule: if it moves, kill it.” Principal Wood gives his “final” tour as they all file into the hallway and Buffy starts to direct them to their right spots.

Faith and Spike lead the potentials to the basement (as Xander says “the bathroom is to your right. If you don’t have to go to the bathroom, think about what you’re about to face. Better to go now.”) Robin points Willow and Kennedy to where his office is, right over the seal.

Kennedy takes a bag of spell components from Willow and says she’ll get set up. Robin then points out three places where the Ubervamps might try to break out of the building.

Giles says they’ll break up in teams of two, with him and Robin taking the lounge (the most likely place for the Ubies to try for escape to the sewers. Robin heads off. Dawn teams up with Xander, and Anya gets paired up with Andrew. “We will defend it with our very lives” says Andrew.

“Yes, we will defend it with his very life” add’s Anya. “And don’t be afraid to use him as a human shield.” Xander suggests to Anya.

Andrew then starts a very awkward “goodbye” speech, almost like an Oscars acceptance speech, even going to the point of pulling out a list of people he’d like to thank.

He starts out with his brother Tucker (who inspired him to summon demons) but Anya interrupts and leads him down the hall to their guarding point. Dawn heads off to check out the area she’s to fight at as Buffy starts after her, calling her name.

Dawn turns “No… anything you say is gonna sound like goodbye.” She then turns back and continues down the hall. Buffy turns back to the remaining three people, Giles, Willow, and Xander. All stand silently in a square.

“So, what you guys wanna do tomorrow?” Buffy asks non-chalantly. Xander suggest miniature golf, but Willow and Buffy want to go to the mall. Giles starts the mumbling of “we’re going to save the world and you’re worried about the mall?” as Buffy says she’s got a wicked shoe craving.

The three youngsters head off, jokingly ignoring Giles, as he heads towards his post with “the Earth is DEFINITELY doomed.” Walking down the darkened hallway, the three friends remain. Willow breaks off with a smile to her two friends as she heads for the Principal’s office.

Xander does the same a few steps later, heading down a hallway. Buffy walks on confidently… … and she walks into the lower basement seal area, where all of the SIT’s and Faith are gathered, surrounding the unburied seal. “You first, B.” Faith says as she hands a knife to Buffy.

Buffy takes the knife and slowly draws it across her palm, tracing a line of red from it. She hands the knife to Faith, who does the same. All of the SIT’s and both Slayers hold out their hands above the seal, squeezing their fists, letting the blood fall on it.

The seal activates! It glows brightly, the corners of the pentagram fold up, the center swirls and sinks in, and the seal is now open! Buffy and Faith exchange a look before Buffy starts to head down into the seal’s opening.

“They should be in place” says Willow as she sits in the principal’s office, which is lit by 8 candles. A few spell components and the scythe lay in front of Willow as Kennedy sits across from her watching.

“Magic time…” Willow nerviously laughs “you ready to kill me?” Kennedy mumbles something… couldn’t tell what she said (sorry). “Brace yourself” Willow says as she grips the scythe firmly in both hands, still keeping it on the floor.

Spike says he’s sorry to be a downer, but his amulet isn’t showing any life. Buffy says she’s not worried, but Spike says he doesn’t feel anything, and complains that he looks like Elizabeth Taylor.

Buffy repeats “I’m not worried” but not sounding all that convinced as they lead the group from the seal opening into a cave which opens into an absolutely HUGE cavern. They stand on a cliff and see dozens of Ubervamps on a cliff across the way, holding weapons and doing their snarling and growling.

Then the camera pans up from the cliff to show the cavern below, which is MASSIVE! Hundreds, no, THOUSANDS of figures, all ubervamps, are crowded together and making with the violent noise! Spike looks down and gets a horrified expression on his face, then pulls back from the edge.

The SIT’s all line up along the cliff’s edge, each having some sort of weapon, also staring down in horror. “I’m not worried…” Buffy says, almost panicing. “Really? Cause I’m flashing back to Xander’s whole bathroom speech.” Amanda asks Buffy for reassurance.

Buffy suddenly gets a little brave and shows strength. “I’m not worried. As long as Willow can work her spell before they…” Suddenly the cavern goes quiet as the ubervamps notice their attackers “… see us.”

The ubervamps on the cavern below instantly start to charge, with hundreds of bodies flying foward. Buffy looks on in disbelief.

Commercial break: Milk, it does a body good… as long as you’re not lactose intolerant, or drink too much whole milk and get fat, or don’t get salmonella, or leave it in the sun too long, or… The Ubies charge, starting to climb up the cliff side, as Buffy looks down and mutters “Willow?”

Willow looks down at the scythe, silently, but nothing is happening yet. Buffy and group look down as the Ubies advance. Willow then starts to breath heavily as she pants “Oh… my… Goddess…” Suddenly the Scythe sings into power, the entire weapon glowing a bright white.

FLASHBACK to Buffy giving her speech about choice to the gathered SIT’s. Buffy says that she’s going to give them the choice of having her power. She says that into each Generation a Slayer is born, all because a bunch of men a long time ago decided it was so.

She says they were powerful, but Willow is more powerful than them. Buffy’s gonna change the rules, making her power all of theirs. Kennedy suddenly lurches back as if hit by a wave of wind. She smiles at her new feelings.

Vi, Rona, Amanda, all of the SIT’s in turn get hit by this invisible wave of newfound strength. FLASHBACK VOICEOVER: “Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny. Every girl in the world who might be a Slayer, will be a Slayer.

Every girl who could have the power, will have the power, who can stand up, will stand up. Slayers, every one of us. Make your choice, are you ready to be strong?” And around the world, unknown girls are hit with this wave of power: A young girl stands nerviously at bat in a baseball game…

A teen staggers against a school locker, becoming light-headed… Another teen lays on the ground of her room, disoriented… An oriental teen stands at her dinner table and swoons..

A hand from an unseen assailiant comes down for a striking blow, but it is blocked by the hand of a teen girl, who rises up in defiance and strength… And the first girl seen at bat is hit by the wave of power. She turns her head towards the pitcher and smiles a wicked grin…

The scythe continues to glow brightly under Willow’s grasp. The Ubies continue towards the SITs, but now the mood is different. Vi sums it up nicely, grinning evilly “These guys are dust.” The Ubervamps attack, jumping over the edge of the cliff and meeting the SIT’s, Slayers, and Spike head-on.

The battle is incredible, with SIT’s more than holding their own against the Ubies, dusting quite a few through staking and decapitation. Kennedy smiles at the newfound power, but then looks at Willow and sees quite a different sight. “Willow?”

She asks as we see Willow lit by a brilliant light, her hair has turned a bright, golden white. She is panting, still out of breath, but she is also smiling as she continues to grasp the scythe. Suddenly the glow fades and Willow returns to normal, red- hair and all. “You are a goddess.” says Kennedy.

“And you’re a Slayer.” answers Willow, who picks up the scythe and hands it to Kennedy, telling her to get it to Buffy. Kennedy rushes out as Willow plops over on the floor, muttering “That was nifty!” Buffy is kicking the crap out of the advancing Ubervamps, as are the rest of the SIT’s and Faith.

Kennedy arrives and calls out to Buffy, tossing the scythe to her. Buffy catches it and instantly stakes an ubervamp, dusting it. Kennedy joins the fray also, punching the crap out of an ubervamp while quipping “I can get used to this!” The battle rages on the cliffside.

While the good guys are finishing the Ubies off, more ubies continue to come. Buffy swings the scythe in slow motion and we see a very cool dusting of one ubie. But then the bad news starts when a few ubies slip past the good guys and climb up through the seal opening.

Anya and Andrew both hold swords in a school hallway, ready to do battle, but Anya is scared, almost shaking. Andrew tells her to think of happy things… “A lake… candy canes… bunnies.” Anya now smiles wickedly. “Bunnies… Floppy, hoppy… bunnies!”

A few Bringers (yes, bringers… don’t know where they came from) charge them… Ubies also attack Giles and Robin, who start kicking ass. More Ubies attack Andrew and Anya. Anya swings her sword and dusts two. As Spike punches out another Ubie below in the cavern, he suddenly staggers back.

He feels… something, but can’t place what. He touches the amulet and it burns his hand. “Buffy! Whatever this thing does, I think its…” He then howls in pain, his head lurching back.

Buffy attempts to call out some commands, telling the SIT’s to try and drive them to the edge of the cliff and keep them there. But she is stopped short when a sword point suddenly sticks out of the side of her stomach.

Buffy looks at the point, then staggers forward, a look of shock on her face, then she falls face down on the hard stone floor. Commercial Break: I can’t believe it’d ever come to this one, last time, but… Windex makes it SHINE!

Faith beats up an Ubervamp, then notices the fallen Buffy and rushes to her side. Buffy looks up, a weak, pained expression on her face. She looks Faith in the eye and says “Hold the line” and holds the scythe out for Faith. Faith grabs the scythe and in a fury she instantly offs three ubies.

Upstairs, Dawn and Xander fight off an ubervamp with swords. Xander does most of the attacking, but then Dawn gets an idea and pulls on some rope. A large tarp falls in front of three ubies who approach, but then sunlight shines down and toasts them all.

Xander starts a joke about the greenhouse effect, but he’s quickly cut short by another ubie who barrels into him. Bringers continue to attack Andrew and Anya. Andrew is cornered as one of them draws his knife, ready for the kill, but Anya stabs him with her sword, saving Andrew.

Then, she herself is stabbed from behind, arching her back in pain. Robin and Giles are getting attacked by Bringers also (I thought they were ubies before, but I guess not, or maybe it’s a mixture?). Robin gets stabbed in the gut by one, but Giles finishes him then goes to catch Robin before he falls.

Back in the cavern, things are looking bad. One SIT is strangled. Faith is busy fending off three at once. Rona’s in trouble and Faith tosses her the scythe, which allows Rona to fend off her attacker (Yes, Rona’s arm is still in a sling). Buffy looks up from the ground to see the situation getting bad.

She is semi-lucid as she sees one of her new Slayers being bitten by an ubervamp, the body falling to the ground right in front of her. “Ow. Oh no… Mommy… this mortal wound is all… itchy.” says Buffy/the First as it slowly comes up to taunt Buffy in her own form, with wound and all.

Buffy looks up at her nemisis with pain and a hint of defeat. “You came pretty close to smacking me down. What more do you want?” “I want you… to get out of my FACE!” Buffy says, her ire now up. Power and anger fill her eyes as she slowly rises up off the ground to her knees, then her feet.

Buffy/the First has an “oh crap” look on it’s face as Rona sees Buffy rising and tosses her the scythe. Buffy instantly swings it and sends three ubies tumbling over the cliff edge. Faith’s three attackers are suddenly thrown up in the air as if she exploded onto the scene!

Chow Ann punches and kicks! Vi levels another Ubie! Kennedy finishes off yet another two of hers. Buffy punches one so hard it FLIES out of shot! Spike punches too, but soon staggers back again, confused and overwealmed. he staggers back to the seal opening…

“Oh Bullocks..” he mumbles as a shaft of golden light starts to shine up from his body and head, shooting upwards, through the roof of the principal’s office, through the outer roof of the building!

Spike calls out to Buffy, who starts to rush towards him, but soon brilliant sunlight starts shining down through the hole, striking the amulet and bright beams of sunlight start streaking out from it’s surface, instantly dusting any ubies they hit!

Entire ranks of ubervamps are instantly incinerated at the bright spotlight of sun. The very power released starts to shake the cavern walls and the place is collapsing! Faith yells for everyone to get out as the Slayers start heading up, past Spike, out of the seal opening.

Buffy finally gets close to Spike as he looks at her, pain and surprise in his face “I can feel it Buffy… my soul! It’s really there… It kinda stings.” Buffy sees the remaining Slayers escaping. The Slayers all run down the hall of the school as it starts to collapse around them.

They come across Andrew, who pushes a dead bringer off of him and is picked up by the Slayers. Now outside, the very ground begins to rumble. Giles helps Robin to safety, but Robin has an idea and tells Giles to get everyone to the Bus. Robin heads for a schoolbus as Giles goes to help.

Almost out of the building, Kennedy helps a still dazed Willow outside as Xander looks around, not wanting to leave, calling out Anya’s name. The building collapsing, Dawn rushes in and grabs Xander’s hand, pulling him out. Anya’s body is seen beneath the rubble.

“Go on then” Spike says as the cavern continues to crumble. The golden shaft of light shines out from the amulet, pinning him to the wall. Buffy tries to argue that he can still get out, but Spike says he’s got to stay behind for clean up.

Faith calls down to Buffy to get out of there as she herself rushes out of the seal opening. With tears in her eyes Buffy almost begs Spike to come, but Spike says “I mean it, I’ve gotta do this.”

Buffy then slowly takes Spike’s hand in hers, interlacing their fingers together as flames spring up from their hands. Buffy continues to hold onto him as he looks at her at the verge of disbelief, seeing something in her eyes… “I love you.” Buffy says softly.

“No you don’t, but thanks for saying it anyways.” Spike responds. Suddenly the entire cavern shakes and is giving way big time! Spike tells Buffy to go, and as she’s leaving out the seal’s opening, Spike mumbles “I wanna see how it ends…” Explosions rock the school as dust is flying everywhere.

Faith races just ahead of the dust cloud and into the bus, which instantly takes off. Dawn looks out the back window of the speeding schoolbus, looking for Buffy. The school still collapsing around her, Buffy runs into a hallway and avoids falling beams. She then heads up a flight of stairs.

Spike smiles wickedly and starts to laugh to himself, forcing back the pain he’s enduring, as the skin on his cheeks starts to melt away.

Almost as if getting burned from the inside, he continues laughing until his skin is literally burned off his skull, then he falls to dust as the amulet falls with him in the collapsing cavern.

The bus speeds down the street, a badly wounded Robin at the wheel, as Xander and Vi tend to the wounded, mopping up blood. Vi tells a wounded and lucid Rona that this is nothing! She has to be strong and fight this! Andrew sits confused, mumbling “why didn’t I die?”

As the bus races along the street, suddenly we see something else… a figure running atop the buildings beside the bus! The very ground behind the bus is giving way into a huge, expanding crater, with the vehicle and running figure both barely keeping ahead of it’s expanding edge.

With scythe in hand, Buffy runs and long-jumps between buildings, keeping up with the bus, looking for the right time to jump. Just as Dawn spots her sister running, Buffy makes one desperate jump and lands on the roof of the Bus!

An overhead shot shows the entire town of Sunnydale being engulfed in a large, growing crater. The rumbling starts to subside as Faith tells Robin to ease off the gas a little.

Out on a desert road, the bus screeches to a halt and Buffy drops down onto the road, looking at the devastation behind them (which we cannot see yet). She then looks down the opposite direction at the road that continues off into the distance.

Dawn whips open the back bus door and hugs her sister tightly as Giles and some others climb out. Giles says “I don’t understand what did this?” Buffy tells him it was Spike. Buffy walks up near the edge of the huge crater that we finally get to see.

One roadsign, “Welcome to Sunnydale”, sits perched on the very edge of the crater before it slowly falls in with a creak and a crash. Getting off the Bus, Andrew tries to pass by Xander, but Xander asks “so did you see?”

Andrew tries to continue on, saying he was too scared, but Xander presses. “She was incredible” Andrew tells him “she died saving my life.” “That’s my girl, always doing the stupid thing” Xander smiles at him, pats him on the shoulder, and waks over to Buffy, Giles, and the others.

Faith sits with Robin, who is close to death at the wheel of the bus. Faith says she’ll get some help, but Robin stops her, asking “Did we make it?” Faith kneels by him, saying “we made it. We won.” Robin looks at her, smiling, but then ever so feigntly, his look grows cold, void.

Faith looks at him, a bit with sorrow, and goes to close his still-opened eyes. As she touches his face he coughs back into life, looks around confused, then mumbles “surprise.”

Faith smiles at him as Vi comes up to tend to his wounds, allowing Faith to join the others. “looks like the hellmouth is officially closed for buisness” says Dawn, gathering at the edge of the crater with Giles, Willow, Faith, Xander, and Buffy. Buffy looks on silently as the others continue to talk.

The entire scene is one, continuous slow close up on Buffy’s face. “There’s another one in Cleveland… not to spoil the moment.” Says Giles. “We saved the world.” Says Xander “We changed the world. I can feel them Buffy.

All over. Slayers are awakening everywhere.” Willow comments “We’ll have to find them.” mumbles Dawn “We will” “Yes, because the mall was actually in Sunnydale and there’s no hope of going there tomorrow.” Giles notes. “You mean we destroyed the mall?”

Dawn asks “I fought on the wrong side.” “All those shops gone… the Gap, Starbucks, Toys-R-Us… who will remember all those landmarks unless we tell the world about them?” “We have a lot of work ahead of us” Giles says, which makes Faith say “Can I push him in?

I just wanna sleep for like a week!” “I guess we all could, if we wanted to.” Dawn says. “Yeah, The first is scruched, so… what do you think we should do Buffy?” Willow asks. “Yeah, you’re not the one and only chosen anymore. you get to live like a person. So whatcha gonna do now?” Faith also asks.

“Yeah, Buffy… what are we gonna do?” Dawn turns to her sister, who calmly takes in the scene, then a slow, sly smile creeps on her lips Grrr… Arrrg… (even the Mutant Enemy has a final farewell, turning towards the viewer for his “arrg”)

INT. CRYPT – NIGHT
BUFFY and ANGEL are still mid-kiss. They break, holding each other.
ANGEL

Well, I guess that qualifies as
“happy to see me.”
BUFFY

Angel, what are you doing — no.
Don’t even. I just wanna bask.

They look at each other, warm and giddy. The smile is still on Buffy’s lips as she says:

BUFFY (cont’d)
Okay. I’m basked. What are you

doing here?
ANGEL

Not saving the damsel in distress,
that’s for sure.
BUFFY

You know me. Not big with the damsel-
ing.

ANGEL
(turning away)
Got your share of distress, though.

BUFFY

And then some. You heard?

Angel retrieves an accordion file from the corner.

ANGEL

I got coverage on the whole thing.
Very gripping, needs a third act.

BUFFY
You have to leave L.A.
ANGEL

It’s the First. Right? The First
Evil, The power that tried to
convince me to kill myself.
BUFFY

Yeah. It’s gotten a little more
ambitious since then. It’s raising

an army.
ANGEL

Well it failed once, and I’m here to
tell you that —

CALEB Babe-Ruths a beam (or torch pole, or whatever) into Angel’s head, sending him flying across the room.
Angel lands face first, skids to a stop.
Buffy looks at Caleb. His eyes are black, dark blood dripping like tears from them, from his nose and mouth. His
voice is otherworldly, coming from everywhere.

CALEB

You ready to finish this, bitch?
END OF TEASER
Act One

INT. CRYPT – NIGHT
Caleb rushes Buffy, swings at her. She blocks with the scythe. His movements are more halting, but his strength
is greater than ever. She stumbles back.

BUFFY

Okay, how many times do I have to
kill you? Ballpark figure.
CALEB
You understand nothing.

He comes at her again and they engage, parry and blow.
ANGLE: SPIKE watches, not sure what to do.
Still they fight, over:

CALEB (cont’d)

You think you have power over me? I
am everything. Everywhere.

BUFFY
Speech gettin’ old
CALEB

Stupid girl. You’ll never stop me.
You don’t have the b —

As he is saying it, she arcs the blade back and swings it up right between his legs. We don’t see it connect, of
course, but we sure as hell see his expression when it does.
BUFFY
Well, who does nowadays?

A moment, and she uses both hands to RIP the blade upwards. We see nothing of the damage, but some dark
blood spatters her face as she completes the scythe’s arc upward. A moment, and we hear the body fall to one
side of her — then hear the other half fall to the other side.
Angel stands, spinning, furious.

ANGEL

Okay, now I’m pissed. Where is he?

Buffy indicates the floor to her left. Angel looks. Then she indicates the floor to her right. Angel looks, then back
at her, impressed. Buffy smiles girlishly.

BUFFY
He had to split.

She snorts with dorkish laughter. Angel just shakes his head reprovingly. She stops after a moment.

BUFFY (cont’d)
I’m sorry, I just… ahhhh… I
haven’t had a good pun in a while.

ANGEL

That would still be the case.

BUFFY
Hey! My kill, my wordplay.
ANGEL
(hands up)
I’m out of line.
BUFFY

Well, I’m still glad you’re here.

ANGLE: SPIKE and the Buffy/First

BUFFY/FIRST
Yeah, she needs you real bad.

Spike just clenches his jaw.
As Buffy wipes the blood from her face Angel retrieves his folder, pulls out some papers, handing them to Buffy.
She scans them.

BUFFY

I’ll have the guys run through this,
see if there’s anything new. Reliable source?

ANGEL
Not remotely.
BUFFY

Well, any port in an apocalypse…

ANGEL

I brought something else as well.

He pulls the AMULET out of his pocket. She stares at it.
BUFFY

I can already tell you, I don’t have
anything that goes with this.

ANGEL
It’s not for you.
BUFFY
Splainy?
ANGEL

I don’t know everything. It’s very
powerful and probably very dangerous.
Has a purifying power… or a
cleansing power – or possibly
scrubbing bubbles, the translation
is… anyway it bestows strength,
worn by the right person.
BUFFY
And the right person is…
ANGEL

Someone ensouled, but stronger than
human. A champion. As in me.

BUFFY
Or me.
ANGEL

No. I don’t know nearly enough about

this to risk you wearing it.
Besides, you’ve already got that cool

axe-thing.
BUFFY

So you’re gonna be with me in this.

ANGEL

Shoulder to shoulder. I’m yours.

ANGLE: SPIKE silently retreats.
Buffy looks at Angel warmly.

BUFFY
No.
ANGEL
No, what?
BUFFY

No, you’re not gonna be in this fight.
She starts to leave as he follows, unhappy. Stops her near the entrance.

ANGEL
Why the hell not?
BUFFY
‘Cause I can’t risk you.
ANGEL
You need me in this.
BUFFY
No, I need you gone.
ANGEL
Why?

She thinks a moment, before:

BUFFY
If I lose… if this gets past
Sunnydale, then it’s days — or
hours — before the rest of the world
goes. I need a second front, and I
need you to run it.
ANGEL

If I’m here we have a better shot at
capping this thing. I’ve read the files —

BUFFY

Well I’ve lived the files and I… if
I can’t win this… it’s my fight,
Angel. It might be my last. But

it’s mine.

A beat, as he takes it in.

ANGEL

Okay. That’s one reason. What’s the

other?
BUFFY
There is no other.

EXT. GRAVEYARD – NIGHT

She exits, gets a few yards away before he appears at the entrance, calling after her:

ANGEL
Is it Spike?

She stops, turns. Not overly anxious to look him in the eye. He approaches.

ANGEL (cont’d)
You’re not telling me something.
And… his scent. I remember it
pretty well.
BUFFY

You vampires… did anybody ever tell
you that the whole smelling everybody
thing is a little gross?
ANGEL
Is he your boyfriend?
BUFFY
Is that your business?
ANGEL
Are you in love with him?

Beat. Buffy can’t answer.

ANGEL (cont’d)
Maybe I’m outta line, but this is
kind of a curveball for me. We are
talking about Spike here.
BUFFY

It’s different. He’s different. He
has a soul now.
ANGEL
Oh. Well.
BUFFY
What.
ANGEL
No, no, that’s great.
(mumbling)
Everyone’s got a soul now.

BUFFY
What are you, pissed?
ANGEL

No, it’s great. One for our side.

BUFFY
He’ll make a difference.
ANGEL
(almost to himself)
You know, I started it.
(right to her)

The whole… having a soul. Before
it was all the “cool new thing”…

BUFFY

Oh my god, are you twelve?

ANGEL

I’m gettin’ the brush off for Captain

Peroxide, it doesn’t bring out the
champion in me.
BUFFY

It’s not the brush off. Having both
of you here would be… confusing.

ANGEL
For who?
BUFFY

Everybody! Why are you so — Are you
gonna come by and get all Dawson on
me every time I have a boyfriend?

ANGEL
Aha! Boyfriend!
BUFFY
He’s not! But…
(thinks about it)
He is in my heart.
ANGEL
That’ll end well.
BUFFY

And what was the highlight of our
relationship? The time you broke up
with me or the time I killed you?

He backs down, the fight going out of both of them. She leans against a crypt, placing the file atop it.

BUFFY (cont’d)

I’m well aware of my stellar history
with guys, and no, I don’t see fat
grandchildren in the offing with
Spike, but… I don’t think that
matters right now.
(thinks a moment)
You know, in the midst of all this…
insanity, couple things are actually
starting to make sense. And the guy

thing…

He joins her, also leaning on the crypt.

BUFFY (cont’d)

You know, I’ve always figured there
was something wrong with me, ’cause
I never made it work. But maybe I’m

not supposed to.
ANGEL
Because you’re the Slayer?

BUFFY

Because… okay, I’m cookie dough,

okay?
ANGEL
Yet another curveball…
BUFFY

I’m not done baking yet. I’m not
finished becoming… whoever the hell
it is I’m gonna turn out to be. I’ve
been looking for someone to make me

feel whole, and maybe I just need to
be whole. I make it through this,
and the next thing, and the next…
maybe one day I turn around and
realize I’m ready. I’m cookies. And
then if I want someone to eat m —

or, to enjoy warm delicious cookie-
me, then that’s fine. That’ll be

then. When I’m done.
ANGEL

Any thoughts on who might enjoy… do
I have to go with the cookie analogy?

BUFFY

I don’t really think that far ahead.
That’s kind of the point.
ANGEL
I get it.

A beat, and he hands her the amulet.

ANGEL (cont’d)
I’ll start working on a second front.
Make sure I don’t have to use it.

A beat, his hands on hers, and he starts off.

BUFFY

Angel. I do. Sometimes… think
that far ahead.

He stops, smiles a bit.

BUFFY (cont’d)
We both have our lives, but…
sometimes…
ANGEL
Sometimes is something.
BUFFY

It’d be a long time coming. Years,

if ever.

He walks backwards into the dark, smiling at her.

ANGEL
I ain’t gettin’ any older.

He disappears into shadow. She watches him go.
INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – FOYER/LIVING ROOM/DINING ROOM – NIGHT
Buffy enters, contemplative. She closes the door and then looks up to see DAWN glaring at her. She looks over
and XANDER is sitting in the dining room, looking pained and sheepish. ANYA rubbing his head. GILES and
WILLOW are also there. Buffy looks back at Dawn.
Dawn silently kicks Buffy in the shin. A beat.

BUFFY
Ow…
DAWN
Dumbass.
Buffy looks over at Xander, who just throws up his hands.

XANDER

Don’t look at me, this is a Summers’
thing. It’s all very violent.
BUFFY
(to Dawn)
You get killed, I’m telling.
WILLOW

Did you find out anything about the

scythe?
BUFFY

I found out it slices, dices and
makes julienne Preacher.
GILES
Caleb?
BUFFY

I cut him in half. I’m not gonna
lie, it was pretty neat.
WILLOW
Well all right!
ANYA
He had that coming.
XANDER

Party in my eye-socket and everyone’s invited!

(beat)

Sometimes I shouldn’t say words.

BUFFY
(re: scythe)

I did find out some history on this
puppy. I’ll fill you in — And I got

some…
(hands over files)
…files, might be helpful, and
(produces amulet)
This. Supposed to be powerful, don’t
know much more.
GILES
Where’d you get all this?
BUFFY
Angel.
DAWN
Angel?
GILES
He’s here.
BUFFY

I sent him back to L.A. To prepare.

She heads out toward the basement, turning back to add:
BUFFY (cont’d)
If we fail.
XANDER
Operative word “If.”

ANYA
Operative word “Fail.”
DAWN

Or, operative word “Wheeee!”

(crickets)
Nobody gets me.

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – BASEMENT – NIGHT
Buffy comes down the steps. Spike sits in the moonlight, no shirt, looking off. Sees her.

SPIKE

So where’s Tall, Dark and Forehead?

BUFFY

Let me guess. You can smell him.

SPIKE

Yeah, that and I also used my
heightened vampire eyeballs to watch

you kissing him.

Busted.

BUFFY

It was a… hello. I was surprised. SPIKE
Most people don’t use their tongues
to say hello. Or, I guess they do,

but —
BUFFY

There was no tongues. Besides, he’s

gone.
SPIKE

Just popped round for a quickie, then?

BUFFY

Good, good, I haven’t had quite
enough jealous vampire crap.

SPIKE
He wears lifts, you know.
BUFFY

One of these days, I’m just gonna put
you two in a room and let you rassle

it out.
SPIKE
No problem at this end.
BUFFY
(warming up to it)

There could maybe be oil of some kind

involved…
SPIKE
Where’s the trinket?
BUFFY
The who-ket?
SPIKE

The pretty necklace your sweetie-bear
gave you. The one with all the
power. I believe it’s mine now.

BUFFY
How do you figure?
SPIKE

Someone with a soul, but more than
human… Angel meant to wear it,
that means I’m the qualified party.

BUFFY

It’s volatile. We don’t know…

SPIKE

You need someone strong to bear it
then. You were planning on giving it

to Andrew?
BUFFY

Angel said… this amulet is meant to
be worn by a champion.

A beat, as he deflates. Then Buffy holds it out to him, and he understands her meaning. Slowly takes it.

SPIKE

Been called a lot of things in my

time…
BUFFY
I want you to be careful.
SPIKE

You’re talking to the wrong guy, love.

(feeling it)
This is powerful.

A beat, as he turns it over in his hand.

BUFFY
(quietly)
Faith’s still got my room.
SPIKE
(looks up)

Well you’re not staying here! Can’t
buy me off with shiny beads and sweet
talk — you’ve got Angel breath.

She looks down, nods quietly.

SPIKE (cont’d)

Won’t just let you whack me back and
forth like a rubber ball. I’ve got
my pride, you know.

She starts to go.

BUFFY
I understand.
SPIKE
(moves to block)
Clearly you don’t, since that whole
“having my pride” thing was a
smokescreen.
BUFFY
(very relieved)
Oh thank god.

SPIKE

I don’t know what I would have done
if you’d gone up those stairs.

She touches his face.

BUFFY
Let’s not find out.

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – BASEMENT – NIGHT
It is later, and Buffy is wrapped in Spike’s arms, facing away from him. They both wear enough to indicate they
did not get sweaty. Spike sleeps, but Buffy cannot. She looks at his hand, resting on the bed in front of her. Runs
her hand along it.
After a moment, Spike rolls over, and Buffy takes the opportunity to sit up. She’s wearing sweatshorts or
something modest and sleepingly. Gets up and crosses to the window, looks out it, bathed in moonlight.
Caleb emerges from the darkness right next to her.

CALEB/FIRST
Pretty, ain’t it?

She jumps a bit, then recovers.

BUFFY
You’re not him.
CALEB/FIRST

No, you killed him right and proper.
Terrible loss. This man was my good
right arm. ‘Course, it doesn’t pain
me too much. Don’t need an arm. Got

an army.
BUFFY

An army of vampires. However will I
fight a bunch of — oh right, I’ve
been doing that for years!
CALEB/FIRST

Every day our numbers swell. But
then, you do have an army of your
own. Some thirty-odd pimply-faced
girls don’t know the pointy end of a
stake, maybe I should call this off!

BUFFY

Have you ever considered a cool name?
Since you’re incorporeal and
basically powerless you could call
yourself “The Taunter.” Strikes

fear…
CALEB/FIRST
I will overrun this earth.
BUFFY

You know how many people have said

that to me?
CALEB/FIRST

I do, since they all had a small part
of me in them. Whereas I have all of
me in me, so I like my chances
somewhat better. And when my army
outnumbers the humans on this earth
the scales will tip and I will be
made flesh.

BUFFY

Talk on. I’m not afraid of you.
CALEB/FIRST

Then why aren’t you asleep in your
dead lover’s arms?

She looks over at Spike, doesn’t answer.

CALEB/FIRST

‘Cause he can’t help you. Nor Faith,
nor your friends… certainly not
your little wannaslay brigade. None
of those girlies will ever know real
power unless you’re dead. You know

the drill:
And here he morphs into Buffy herself, coming close to say:
BUFFY/FIRST
Into every generation, a Slayer is
born. One girl in all the world.
She alone will have the strength and
skill to fight the… well there’s
that word again. What you are. How
you’ll die. Alone.

Buffy takes this in, says nothing.

BUFFY/FIRST (cont’d)
Where’s your snappy comeback?

BUFFY
(softly)
You’re right.
BUFFY/FIRST
Mmm. Not your best.
SPIKE
I’m drowning in footwear!

Buffy looks over at Spike, who wakes with a start. She looks back to Spike, who shakes it off:

SPIKE (cont’d)
Weird dream.

She doesn’t answer.

SPIKE (cont’d)
Buffy? Is something wrong?
She takes her time looking back at him, something quietly building in her.

BUFFY

No. Yes. I just realized something.
Something that really never occurred

to me before.

He sits up, quizzical.

BUFFY (cont’d)
We’re gonna win.
END OF ACT ONE
Act Two

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – BUFFY’S BEDROOM – DAY

Buffy is there with the gang (Dawn, FAITH, Xander, Willow, Giles, Anya). Buffy has the scythe. Faith is out of bed,
working out the kinks in her neck and arms, testing her strength as she listens.

BUFFY
Well? What do you think?

A beat.

XANDER
That depends.
(sincere question)
Are you kidding?
BUFFY

You don’t think it’s a good idea?

FAITH
It’s pretty radical, B.
GILES

It’s a lot more than that. Buffy
what you’re talking about flies in
the face of everything we’ve ever —
that every generation has ever done
in the fight against evil.
(smiles)
I think it’s bloody brilliant.
BUFFY
You mean that?
GILES
If you want my opinion.
BUFFY
I really do.
WILLOW

Whoa hey, not to poop on the party,
but I’m the guy who’s gonna have to

pull this off.
FAITH
It is beaucoup d’mojo…
DAWN
Is it even possible?
GILES

I believe it is, if what Buffy has
told us about this weapon is true.

WILLOW

Not to careen back to the me subject,
but… I’m… this is beyond anything
I’ve ever done. This is a total loss
of control, and not in a nice,

wholesome, my-girl-friend-has-a-
pierced-tongue way.

BUFFY

I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think you

could do it.
WILLOW

I’m just not sure I’m stable enough

to —

ANYA

Oh, sure y’are. You’re as stable as
the molecules in Mister Fantastic’s
uniform, am I right?
XANDER

Oh, you just couldn’t have picked a
worse example.
GILES

You’re going to do this, Willow. Get
the coven on the line, see how they

can help. I’ll —
DAWN
Oh!
(off their looks)
“pierced tongue”
BUFFY
(quickly)

Dawn should do a research thing.

GILES
Yes, you —
DAWN

It’s cool. Watcher Junior to the

library.
(as she goes, to
Buffy)

You get to save the world, I get more

homework.
BUFFY

You could have been in Oxnard…

GILES

I’ll start digging up my sources.
Literally, actually; there’s one or
two people I need to talk to who are

dead.
ANYA
(to Xander)

Come on. Let’s go assemble the
cannon fodder.
XANDER

We’re not calling them that, sweetie.

ANYA

Not to their faces — what am I,
insensitive?
BUFFY
Willow…
WILLOW
(re: scythe)

I’m gonna need to run an energy scan
on that puppy. To start with.

FAITH

Sure you’re ready to give it up?

As Buffy hands the scythe to Willow…

BUFFY (V.O.)
I hate this.

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – LIVING ROOM – DAY
Every single person ever is in the house, packed like th’ little fishes. There is just enough room for Buffy to pace
a little, inspirational-sergeant-style, as she speaks. The newbies await Buffy’s latest proclamation with initial
distrust.

BUFFY

I hate being here. I hate that you
have to be here. I hate that there’s
evil, that it’s growing, and I hate
that I was chosen to fight it.
I wish, a whole lot of the time, that

I hadn’t been.
(smiling wryly)
I know a lot of you wish I hadn’t

been either.
KENNEDY and VI smile a bit, others look embarrassed.
BUFFY (cont’d)
But this isn’t about wishes. This is
about choices. I never had one. I
was chosen. And I accept that. I’m
not asking you to accept anything.
I’m asking you to make your own
choice. I believe we can beat this
evil — not when it comes, not after
its army is ready, but now. Tomorrow
morning I’m opening the Seal. I’m
going down into the Hellmouth and I’m
going to finish it once and for all.

We see the gang as Buffy continues:

BUFFY (cont’d)
I’ve got strong allies: warriors,
charms, sorcerers, and I’ll need them
all. But I’ll also need you. Every
single one of you. So now you’re
asking yourself, “What makes this
different? What makes us anything more
than a bunch of girls getting picked
off one by one?” It’s true none
of you has the power Faith and
I have. I think both of us would
have to die for a new Slayer to be
called, and we can’t even be sure
that girl is in this room. That’s
the rule. So here’s the part where
you make a choice.

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – BASEMENT – DAY
Faith and WOOD finish moving something big and metal in front of a grate. Sweaty work.

WOOD
It’s a hell of a risky idea.
FAITH
Buffy’s wacky that way.
WOOD

There’s one more vent right by the

stairs.
(they head for it)

We block that, they got no sewer
access, should drive them up into the

school proper.
FAITH

That’s assuming they get past us.

WOOD
Which, no offense, I am.
FAITH

Come on, you gotta have a little

faith.
WOOD
(sardonic)

Think I’ve had my share, thanks.

FAITH

Well I trundled right into that,
didn’t I. Look, I’m sorry if it
seemed like I was blowing you off the
other day. I was just trying to, you
know… blow you off.

They start covering the vent by the stairs with stuff.
WOOD

I figured that out all by myself.

FAITH

It’s nothing personal, it’s just…
after I get bouncy with a guy,
there’s not a whole lot more I need
to know about him.
WOOD
That’s bleak.
FAITH
Way of the world.
WOOD

Good to know. For a second there, I
was mistaking it for more defensive,
isolationist Slayer crap.
FAITH

And he comes out swingin’…

WOOD

There is a whole world you don’t even
know about, and a lot of the men in
it are pretty decent guys. They’d
surprise you.
FAITH

Guy looks at me, let’s just say his
priorities shift.
WOOD
‘Cause you’re so hot?
FAITH
Is what it is, yo.
WOOD

Please. I’m much prettier than you.

Faith starts in open-mouthed, victorian shock — she actually puts a hand to her breast.

WOOD (cont’d)
And for the record, our little
encounter didn’t exactly change my

world.
FAITH

You’re tripping! That was rock ’em

sock ’em!
WOOD

Oh, it was nice enough… you’re
very… enthused… with a little
more experience I think you’ll

really…
FAITH
Dude, I got mad skills!
WOOD
No, of course.
(re: work)
Let’s finish up.
FAITH

Hell with that. We’re going again!
You’re gonna learn a little respect

here, pal.
She starts pulling off her shirt, Wood stopping her with:
WOOD

Faith. Make me a deal. We live
through this, you give me the chance

to surprise you.
FAITH
(suspicious)

Well, what would be the surprise?

WOOD

You do know the meaning of the word,

right?
FAITH
Fine. Deal.
WOOD
Good enough.

They start moving heavy shit again.

FAITH

No way are you prettier than me.

WOOD
Little bit.
INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – WILLOW’S BEDROOM – NIGHT
Willow has the scythe on her bed, along with a bunch of books and papers, mystical objects, and Kennedy. Willow
is scribbling down a mystical equation, looking nervous as a kitten.
WILLOW

I really wish she hadn’t said that

about me.

KENNEDY

What, the thing Buffy said? I think

it’s true.
WILLOW
(hapless face)
Ehheh.
KENNEDY
I’ll be with you. To keep you
grounded.
WILLOW
(spear-jab motion)
You may have to keep me stabbed… if
I go to the bad place.
KENNEDY

You’re saying I might have to kill

you.
WILLOW
I am.
KENNEDY
Bite me.
WILLOW

I will. I mean, I do. Mean it. If
I go south, you gotta protect the

others.
KENNEDY
It’s not gonna happen.
WILLOW

The darkest place I’ve ever been —
this is what lies beyond that. This
is too important for me to…
KENNEDY
Buffy believes in you.
WILLOW

You know, Buffy: Sweet girl, not

that bright.
KENNEDY

Hey, I’m the first to call her out
when she’s not making sense… in
fact this may have escaped your keen
notice, but I’m kind of a brat. I’ve
sort of always gotten my way. So
you’re gonna make it through this, no
matter how dark it gets. Because
now… you’re my way.

And smooch.

WILLOW
I better go over it again.

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – DINING ROOM – NIGHT
Giles sits at the table with Xander. There is a pile of books and plans before us, so we can’t see the map they are
referring to. AMANDA looks on, and an ND potential. They are tired, but earnest.

GILES

I’ve gotten turned around. You’re

here.
XANDER

By the pillar, yeah. I’m protecting

this area.
GILES

That puts me here. By the door.
Demons around the perimeter… right.
So I open the door.

Widen to find ANDREW, reading from an old rule book with some handwritten notes on loose leaf. And, oh, yeah,
he’s wearing a red cloak, hood up.

ANDREW

You go through the door… you are
confronted by Trogdor the Burninator.

GILES
Bugger all. Fight.

Giles rolls ten-sided dice.

ANDREW

Adios to five hit points. Trogdor
has badly wounded you.
GILES

What about my bag of illusions?

ANDREW

Illusions? Against a burninator?

(chuckles)
Silly, silly British man.
AMANDA

I invoke a time flux on Trogdor.

ANDREW

Step down, girlfriend, you can’t

just —
AMANDA

Ninth level sorcerer, and I carry the
emerald chalice. Trogdor is frozen
in time, deal with it.
XANDER

Smackdown on red riding hood! This

could get ugly.
GILES

Could it possibly get uglier? I used
to be a highly respected Watcher.
Now I’m a wounded dwarf with the
mystical strength of a doily.
(rubs his eyes)
I wish I could just sleep.
AMANDA

What kind of person could sleep on a

night like this?

WIDEN to find Anya, head on the table, snoring away. Xander puts a hand on her head, affectionately.

XANDER
Only the crazy ones.

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – DAWN’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

A messload of Potentials are in the room, some with sleeping bags, some just hanging, all more or less sitting at
the feet or Dawn, who sits on her bed, in mid-tale.
DAWN

And the Master grabbed Buffy from
behind and bit her, she tried to move
but he was too strong, he fed on her
blood and he tossed her in the water,
cackling insanely as the bubbles rose
around her and she slowly drowned to

death.
VI
(upset)

Do you have any other stories?

DAWN

She gets up again, it’s very
romantic. Guys, you gotta stop
worrying. It’s Buffy. She always
saves the day.

EXT. SUMMERS’ HOME – NIGHT
Buffy stands on the front porch, worried as hell and very much alone. After a long while, she takes the lantern
and heads inside.
INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – BASEMENT – NIGHT
Spike sits, shirted this time, on the bed. He looks at the amulet, thinking.
He stands as Buffy comes down the stairs. They stand on opposite sides of the room, looking at each other.
EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – DAY
Tableau: the deserted school. A couple of buses, one of them half way in the road, doors open.
We push in at the school, slowly, until Wood blows past us, girls in tow, and we see the gang headed in.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – DAY
We’re still behind Wood as he leads the group, that we now see includes Buffy, stopping at the big space at the
bottom of the stairs.

WOOD

Welcome to Sunnydale High. There’s
no running in the halls, no yelling
and no gum. Apart from that we have

only one rule.
(stops and turns)
If they move, kill ’em.
BUFFY

Potentials are in the basement,
follow Faith and Spike.

Spike and Faith herd the girls down the hall.

XANDER

If you have to go to the bathroom,
it’s on the left. If you don’t have
to go to the bathroom, picture what
you’re about to face. Better to go

NOW.

The gang clusters around this area as orders and plans continue to rattle out of people:

WOOD

Willow, my office is through there.

BUFFY
It’s right over the Seal.
KENNEDY
(takes Will’s bag)
I’ll start getting you set up.
WILLOW
Thanks.
WOOD

Okay, civilians. The vampires get
upstairs we have three areas they
could get through to another building
and down into the sewers.

The camera whips around him as he points them out.

WOOD (cont’d)
Down the hall in the atrium, the
north hall here, and the primary
target, through the lounge to the
science building. Odds are, most of
them will head there. Easy to find,
big, no sunlight.
GILES

Teams of two then, and I suggest you
and I take the lounge.
WOOD
I concur.
BUFFY

Xander, I want you with Dawn.

XANDER
I concur.
DAWN
We’ll take the atrium.
ANYA

So that leaves me and the dungeon
master in the north hall.
ANDREW

We will defend it with our very lives.

ANYA

Yes, we’ll defend it with his very

life.
XANDER

Don’t be afraid to use him as a human

shield.
ANYA
Good, yes, thanks.
ANDREW

And I just wanna say how proud I am
to die for this really special cause
with you guys.
(unfolding paper)
There’s some people I’d like to
thank, both good and evil… a shout
out to my brother Tucker, who gave me

the inspiration to summon demons

and also —
ANYA

Nobody cares, ya little monkey.

Anya drags Andrew off as Wood also goes off into his corner.
DAWN

I’m gonna check out our field of
engagement.

She starts down the hall. Buffy goes after her…

BUFFY
Dawn…
DAWN
No.

Dawn turns back, not waiting for Buffy to speak.

DAWN (cont’d)

Anything you say is gonna sound like

goodbye.

And she turns and goes. Buffy watches her. Turns back and joins the group.
There is a moment, all of them looking at each other, and we realize it’s the original four: Buffy, Giles, Willow and
Xander. The camera slowly circles around them as they realize it too, look at each other with unspoken feeling.
Finally:

BUFFY

So. What do you guys wanna do

tomorrow?
WILLOW
Nothing strenuous…
XANDER

Mini-golf is always the first thing
that comes to mind.
GILES

Well, I think we can do better than that.

BUFFY

I’m pretty much thinking about
shopping. As usual.
WILLOW

There’s an Agnes B. in the new mall!

XANDER
I could use a few items.
GILES

Well, no, aren’t we gonna discuss
this? We’re saving the world to go

to the mall?
BUFFY

I’m having a wicked shoe craving.

XANDER
Aren’t you on the patch?
WILLOW
Those never work.

GILES

And I’m just here, invisible to the
eye, not having any vote…

And the kids are headed off, leaving Giles to watch them.
XANDER

See, it’s the eye-patch thing.

BUFFY

Right, do you go with the full black
secret agent look —
WILLOW

Or the puffy shirt pirate-slash-poet
feel. Sensitive yet manly…
XANDER
Now you’re gettin’ a little
renaissance fair on me.
BUFFY
It’s a fine line.

Giles turns away from them.

GILES

The earth is definitely doomed.

He heads off to his corner.
ANGLE: The three of them. They walk together, in slightly slow motion, down the hall. Willow peels off, then
Xander, everyone casually talking, any other day, until Buffy is alone. There is no sound save music.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – BASEMENT HALL/SEAL ROOM – DAY
Buffy comes down the stairs and on top of the music we hear voices, remembered voices, phrases from her past
— her first meetings with her friends, key moments together, it all builds and jumbles in her head as she walks
along the hall until she reaches

SPIKE
Time to go to work, love.

He is standing at the end of the hall. He indicates the Potentials. Some are crowded outside the chamber ’cause
there’s not enough room for everyone. Buffy is let through, moves to the edge of the Seal, next to Faith, who
holds out Andrew’s knife.

FAITH
You’re first, B.

Buffy takes the knife, cuts her hand, lets it drip onto the Seal. Faith takes the knife —

FAITH (cont’d)
Pucker up, ladies. We’re going to

Hell.

–and slices her own hand with casual aplomb.
Hands over the knife to Amanda, who is much more hesitant…

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – SEAL ROOM – A BIT LATER
As girls all around the circle are holding out their hands…
ANGLE: The SEAL — starts to open.
A moment of watching it, and Buffy starts down.

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – DAY
Willow sits on the floor, the scythe in front of her and mystical objects arranged. Kennedy watches her from the
other side of the room.

WILLOW

They should be in place. Okay.
Magic time. You ready to… heh
heh… kill me?
KENNEDY
Starting to be…
WILLOW
Great. Pun. Right.
(takes a breath)
Brace yourself.

She shuts her eyes.

KENNEDY
(quietly)

Come on, Red. Make it happen.

INT. CAVERN – DAY
Buffy, Faith and a few girls have climbed down, as more follow. Spike comes abreast of Buffy.

SPIKE

Not to be a buzzkill, luv, but my
fabulous accessory isn’t exactly
tingling with power.
BUFFY
I’m not worried.
SPIKE

I’m getting zero juice here. And I
look like Elizabeth Taylor.
FAITH

Cheer up, Liz. Willow’s big spell
doesn’t work, won’t matter what you

wear.
BUFFY
I’m not worried.

She is looking straight ahead and the others now pay attention as they approach:
ANGLE: THE PRECIPICE, beyond which is an ENDLESS cavern swarming with THOUSANDS of Ubervamps.
ANGLE: OUR GUYS stare down at them.

BUFFY (cont’d)
(catatonic)
I’m not worried…
RONA
(whisper)

Really? ‘Cause I’m flashing back to
Xander’s whole bathroom speech.

AMANDA
Buffy?
BUFFY
(closes her eyes)
Now Willow Now Willow Now….

AMANDA
(more worried)
Buffy…
BUFFY

I’m not worried! As long as Willow
can work the spell before they —

As one, the vamps see the girls and charge, screaming.
BUFFY (cont’d)
— see us.
END OF ACT TWO
Act Three

INT. CAVERN – CONTINUING
The girls await the really noisy death approaching from off camera. They are, hey, terrified.

BUFFY
(sooo quiet)
Willow…
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
Willow is mumbling something rapidfire under her breath.
KENNEDY
Willow?
Willow stabs her a SHUT UP look, her lips still moving.
INT. CAVERN – CONTINUING
On Buffy and Faith, starting to think about retreat…
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
Willow suddenly tenses up, eyes wide, as light begins to fill the room… We do a series of quick dissolves, moving
in at her…

WILLOW
Oh…
WILLOW (cont’d)
My…
WILLOW (cont’d)
Goddess.
Kennedy falls back, slammed by something unseen.

KENNEDY
NNnnhhhhaahhhh….

INT. SUMMERS’ HOME – LIVING ROOM – DAY (DAY 2)
We flash back now to the second half of Buffy’s speech to the Potentials, picking it up again at:

BUFFY

So here’s the part where you make a

choice.

And we lay in a SERIES OF IMAGES to be INTERCUT with the living room scene. Some of Buffy’s speech we see,
some we just hear over the images. What she has to say is this:
BUFFY (cont’d)

What if you could have that power?

Now. All of you. In every
generation one Slayer is born because
a bunch of guys that died thousands
of years ago made up that rule. They
were powerful men.
(points to Willow)
This woman is more powerful than all
of them combined. So I say we change
the rules. I say my power should be
our power. Tomorrow Willow will use
the essence of this scythe, that
contains the energy and history of so
many Slayers, to change our destiny.
From now on, every girl in the world
who might be a Slayer, will be a
Slayer. Every girl who could have
the power, will have the power. Who
can stand up, will stand up. Every
one of you, and girls we’ve never
known, and generations to come…
they will have strength they never
dreamed of, and more than that, they
will have each other. Slayers.
Every one of us. Make your choice.
Are you ready to be strong?

And what we see is the present, the moment of the spell’s consummation, in different places:
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – DAY
Kennedy’s head rears into frame, her eyes sparkling with power.
INT. CAVERN – DAY
We steadicam along the row of Potentials as they too absorb the power.
It’s a rushing wind, a hammer blow, it’s hard, soft, confusing, a first orgasm, a perfect equation, a fevered
dream… it’s power.
And it’s happening everywhere.
INT. INDIA – NIGHT
A GIRL has fallen to the floor, wide-eyed as the power and knowledge course through her.
INT. INNER CITY SCHOOL – DAY
Unnoticed by the throng, an AFRICAN AMERICAN GIRL leans against her locker, breathing hard, looking almost
puzzled.
INT. TRAILER – DAY
We see the back of a beefy fellow as he is about to strike someone — and HER hand blocks his blow. She rises
into frame, slightly bruised and bleeding, but with a cold fury in her eyes that suggests that won’t be happening
again.
INT. JAPANESE HOME – NIGHT
The family is having dinner as the DAUGHTER backs away from the table, trying to keep her balance.
EXT. BASEBALL DIAMOND – DAY
A twelve year old girl stands uncertainly at the plate as the power hits her: she takes it in, looking down in
confusion…. then looking back up, slowly, her stance straightening and a wicked grin on her face.
AND FINALLY BACK TO:
INT. CAVERN – CONTINUING

As the girls come out of slo-mo and into their own.

AMANDA
Sweet fancy moses.

Buffy and Faith beam at each other.

FAITH
You feel that?
BUFFY
I really do.

Faith looks ahead, they all steel themselves, various expressions of readiness and uncertainty on various faces…

FAITH

Everybody, hold the line…

VI
(dead cool)
These guys are dust.

And the first wave hits, the vamps cresting the edge en masse, swarming over the girls —
Sorry. “Slayers”. Who take the horde and beat it back, every single one of them slicing, kicking, twirling,
punching, slaying like they’ve been doing it all their lives.
They are taking out a bunch (Spike keeping his end up just fine, thank you), holding off others — but the vamps
keep coming, endlessly. It’s brutal and dark and sweaty and bloody and I love it. I love it.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – DAY
Kennedy is giddy, still out there.

KENNEDY
Oh, this is…
She stops, the smile leaving her face as she sees Willow.
KENNEDY (cont’d)
(small voice)
Willow?

ANGLE: WILLOW
Is blown by a force so powerful, so loving, that she is bathed in pure white wind, her hair is actually white,
streaming out behind her, her smile a bowl to catch her tears.
A moment of transcendence, then it ends, the wind sucking out of her and her appearance returning to normal.
She is clearly completely spent.

KENNEDY (cont’d)
You are a Goddess.
WILLOW
And you’re a Slayer.

She tosses Kennedy the scythe.

WILLOW (cont’d)
Get this to Buffy.

Kennedy looks at her for a moment, then runs off. Willow collapses onto her side, giggling like a dope.

WILLOW (cont’d)
That was nifty.

INT. CAVERN – DAY

Buffy is near the edge, fighting just about everyone she can touch. She tosses a vamp over the side, stakes
another, then takes a couple of brutal hits.
Kennedy jumps down through the Seal opening, calls out:
KENNEDY
Buffy! Catch!

And she hurls the scythe right at her.
ANGLE: THE SCYTHE twirls through the air.
Buffy is fighting, catches it without even looking back, and dispatches two vamps immediately.
Kennedy is attacked and jumps high, kicks hard — pummels vamps with newfound power.

KENNEDY (cont’d)
Oh, I could get used to this.

ANGLE: SPIKE
Doing his thing.
ANGLE: AMANDA AND VI
Doing something surprisingly similar to Spike’s thing.
ANGLE: BUFFY
As she flips the axe in her hand for the big swing and we see:
SLO MO TABLEAU:
The war. Buffy in foreground, axe swinging through an already dusting vamp, a war cry bursting from her mouth.
Faith beside her, kicking the face of another vamp. In mid air in the background, a vamp and a Slayer LEAP at
each other, above the heads of the warring crowd. There is nothing to see here but the sprawling, brawling mob.
Everybody’s kung fu fighting.
ANGLE: A few vamps get thrown into the back, see the Seal opening and scurry up it. More follow.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – LOUNGE – DAY
Giles and Wood look at each other — they can hear them. Giles has a hand rolled cigarette. He offers it to Wood,
who declines, blowing out a little smoke as Giles stamps out the cigarette. They hoist their swords.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – ATRIUM – DAY
Xander and Dawn also wait.

DAWN

You were gonna take me to Oxnard?

XANDER

I know some people there. You’re in

my blind spot.
DAWN
Ooh.

She gingerly and swiftly changes sides with him.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – NORTH HALL – DAY
Andrew and Anya, also in wait mode.

ANDREW
I think they’re coming…
ANYA

Oh God. I’m terrified. I didn’t
think… I just figured you would be

terrified and I would be sarcastic

about it.
ANDREW (also shit-scared)
Picture happy things. A lake. Candy
canes. Bunnies.

Anya’s eyes narrow.

ANYA

Bunnies. Floppy, hoppy, bunnies.

Her sword comes up, all of her fear gone.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – LOUNGE – DAY
A group of Ubervamps come barreling down the hall toward Giles and Wood, who have blades at the ready. They
fight the vamps expertly, Giles scoring a beheading, but mostly just hold them off, being driven slowly back.
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – NORTH HALL – DAY
A few of them come at Anya — who’s pretty damn good with a sword — and Andrew, who’s Jerry Lewis with a
sword, but somehow managing to keep them at bay…
A group of five Bringers appears in the hall behind them, all armed with knives and swords.
INT. CAVERN – DAY
Spike is fighting, off in the corner, gets momentarily wigged by the amulet on his chest.

SPIKE
Uh, Buffy…?

But she is in the heat of battle.

SPIKE (cont’d)
Whatever this thing does… I think

it’s… AHHH!

He drops to his knees, stunned by pain.
ANGLE: A SLAYER that we don’t know is leapt on and bitten by a vamp, goes down.
Buffy sees this, sees the army not getting smaller. Faith comes back to back with her. She’s exhausted but game.

FAITH

Think it’s a little too late to talk this

thing out?
BUFFY
(calls out to the girls)
Keep the line together! Drive them
to the edge, we can’t let them —

A sword slices through her back, pops out her belly, retracts.
Everything gets quiet. Buffy looks about her, unsteady, as Faith tackles the vamp behind her that’s about to finish
her off.
Buffy falls slowly to the ground, face first.

END OF ACT THREE
Act Four

INT SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – ATRIUM – DAY
Xander swings his sword, is driven back by vamps — and Dawn yanks a rope, pulls a tarp off the skylight,
sunlight pouring in and BURNING the three vamps.

XANDER

We call that the greenhouse effect.
Very dangerous —

One other leaps on Xander, tackling him, weaponless, as Dawn grabs a sword, swings —
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – NORTH HALL – DAY
Wood, being pushed back with Giles, sees three Bringers approaching them from behind, hurls a knife into one of
their throats with perfect precision.
INT SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – NORTH HALL – DAY
The Bringers descend on Andrew and Anya, driving them apart — Andrew toward the north hall, Anya down the
adjacent hall that leads outside. Andrew goes down holding his sword out pathetically, a Bringer leaping onto him
with a knife.
Anya slashes one – drops it, and another comes from the side, she turns and is gutted, the Bringer stabbing her
repeatedly as she drops, dead.
INT. CAVERN – DAY
Faith makes her way to Buffy, who still lies on the ground.
FAITH
Buffy?
BUFFY
(weakly)
Hold the line…

And she holds out her scythe to Faith. A moment, and Faith takes it. Stabs the guy behind her without looking at
him. And then goes apeshit on the fuckers.
ANGLE: SPIKE
Searing pain racks his body. He tosses away a vamp, confusion and pain on his face. He clutches his stomach.
ANGLE: FAITH
As a vamp gets her around the neck from behind, they dogpile her, she calls out:

FAITH
Rona!

And tosses the scythe to her as she is buried in vamps. Rona grabs it, starts hacking.
Buffy still wheezes, looking at legs and feet, everything a bit blurred, as Amanda drops right in front of her, eyes
wide, very dead.
INT SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – LOUNGE – DAY
Wood is fighting a Bringer, who slices him badly in the chest. Ubervamps run past him and Giles, free to escape
into the next building.
INT. CAVERN – DAY
Two more Slayers fall, girls we don’t know. Kennedy is backed against a wall, her weapon knocked from her hand
— trying to steady herself…
Buffy still lies on the ground, looks up to see:
Yup, Buffy, or rather The First. Smiling at her, looking exactly like her, wound and all.

BUFFY/FIRST

Ooh! Ow! Mommy! This mortal wound

is all itchy!
(leans in)

You pulled a nice trick. Hey, you

came pretty close to smacking me
down. What more do you want?

Buffy pulls herself up on her hands, fury in her eyes.
BUFFY

I want you… to get out of my face.

The First looks suddenly worried.
SLO MO: Buffy rises. Sweaty, bloodied, hair in her face, but nothing but resolve in her eyes. The First is nowhere
in sight as she takes a step forward, two, stumbling, hunched steps…
Rona sees her and throws her the scythe. Buffy catches it. Stands a little straighter.
And SCREAMS, and swings the back of the axe like it’s a bat, knocking five vamps back and over the edge in one
blow. Sauron himself would be, like, “dude…”
ANGLE: The pile of vamps on Faith flies back as she kicks out — Faith kips up, also bloodied, also unbroken.
And the girls turn the tide, forcing the vamps back, many of them falling over the edge — and at least one Slayer
going with them.
ANGLE: SPIKE stumbles under the Seal opening.

SPIKE
Oh, bollocks.

And energy SHOOTS up from him, straight through
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – SEAL CHAMBER – CONTINUING
and up into
INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – PRINCIPAL WOOD’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
bursting through the floor, narrowly missing the still-prone Willow, and continuing through the ceiling, from
whence the noon sun pours straight back down.

WILLOW
I didn’t do that…

INT. CAVERN – CONTINUING
The sun hits Spike and he is pinned, pain and something else building in him.

SPIKE
Buffy…

She sees, races to him —

BUFFY
Spike!

And has to dive out of the way as a prismed ray of pure, soulful sunlight blasts out of the amulet and into the
cavern. It wipes out the vamps instantly — and even starts tearing apart the cavern.

FAITH
Everybody out! Now!

The girls fight their way to the exit. Everything is shaking. Buffy comes to Spike. He is pinned in place, energy
still blasting from him.

SPIKE
I can feel it, Buffy.
BUFFY
What?
SPIKE

My soul. It’s really there. Kinda stings.

INT. SAME – DAY
As debris falls and everything shakes, the Slayers run out toward the entrance.
EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – CONTINUING
Giles is helping Wood toward:

WOOD

The bus! Get ’em on the bus!

GILES
Everybody! This way!

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – DAY
Kennedy helps Willow out, as Dawn pulls on Xander, who is calling out:
XANDER
Anya! ANYA!
We see, as he cannot, her corpse, hidden by debris and fallen Bringers.
ANGLE: A BRINGER — the one that jumped on Andrew falls away, Andrew’s sword in his chest. Andrew is
bloodied but alive, and completely wigged by the fact.
ANDREW
Why…

A girl grabs him, hauls him out.
INT. CAVERN – CONTINUING
Buffy hasn’t left Spike’s side.

SPIKE
Go on, then…
BUFFY

You’ve done enough, you can still —

SPIKE

No. You beat ’em back, it’s for me
to do the clean up.

Faith calls from the entrance:

FAITH
Buffy! Come on!

Then falling debris makes her bail.
Stuff is falling around Buffy and Spike as well.

SPIKE

Gotta move, lamb. I think it’s fair
to say school’s out for the bloody summer.

ANGLE: THE CAVERN
is collapsing at the top and bottom — the actual school falling in on the vamps.

BUFFY
Spike…
SPIKE
I mean it. I gotta do this.

His hand is held up, frozen in his rictus of revelatory pain. Buffy takes her own hand, interlocks it with his. A
moment, and both hands burst into flames.

We hold close on the two of them, ignoring the flames, looking at each other.

BUFFY
I love you.

A moment. He smiles kindly.

SPIKE

No you don’t. But thanks for saying it.

A big quake rocks them. Spike pushes her away.

SPIKE (cont’d)
It’s your world up there. Now GO!

She looks at him — and bolts.
He looks back at the destruction in front of him, smiles wickedly.
SPIKE (cont’d)
I wanna see how it ends.

EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – DAY
Wood shuts the door — he’s at the wheel — and the bus peels out.
ANGLE: The very back of the bus — there’s Dawn, looking for
DAWN
Buffy…

INT. SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL – DAY
Buffy tries to head for the door, but is blocked. She has nowhere to go but up the stairs.
INT. CAVERN – DAY
Spike is still smiling as he is eaten from inside by the power, and the world falls away from beneath him as he
dies.
EXT. SUNNYDALE – DAY
The bus rolls on, just ahead of the cracking earth.
INT. BUS – CONTINUING
Faith is by Wood, staunching his wound.
Giles is wrapping a tourniquet around a wounded Rona, who is fading… Vi helps him, all in Rona’s face.

VI

Stay awake. Look at me! This is

nothing!

Andrew sits by himself, lost.

ANDREW
Why didn’t I die?

Xander tends a girl, lost in his own thoughts.
Kennedy holds onto the still exhausted Willow.
And Dawn still looks out the back window for any sign of her sister. And then she sees:
EXT. ROOFTOPS – DAY
Her sister. Running along the rooftop, jumping off of one just as it collapses, keeping pace with the bus…
The bus pulls out ahead of the last building and Buffy JUMPS an impossible distance, right in front of the
collapsing Sun Cinema sign, and lands hard on top of the bus.

ANGLE: ABOVE BUFFY
As she holds on, looking over the back at the cracks chasing them.
ANGLE: SUNNYDALE from way high up — the whole town is sinking into a smoking black crater, a tiny bus just
making its way to the edge of town ahead of the destruction.
EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN – DAY
The bus roars along. Buffy still atop it, no longer in danger.
INT. BUS – DAY
Faith looks back, tells Wood:

FAITH
Ease off. We’re clear.

EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN – CONTINUING
The bus screeches to a stop. Buffy jumps off and people start getting out, Dawn opening the back door and
jumping out. Buffy and Dawn hug for a long while.
ANGLE: XANDER AND ANDREW
Xander knows there’s no hope, but presses:

XANDER
Did you see?
ANDREW
I was scared, I’m sorry…
XANDER

Did you see what happened? Was she…

Andrew looks at Xander a moment, rises up a bit.

ANDREW

She was incredible. She died saving

my life.

Xander puts a hand on Andrew’s shoulder.

XANDER
(welling up)

That’s my girl. Always doing the
stupid thing.

Andrew nods, sadly.
INT. BUS – DAY
Everyone is off as Faith looks at Wood’s wound.

FAITH

It’s not that bad… you just sit here.

WOOD
That’s the plan…
FAITH
I’ll get someone to —
WOOD
Did we make it?

He looks at her. A Beat.

FAITH
We made it. We won.

He smiles a little… and then he is just staring. And still. Faith takes a moment, then moves to cover his eyes.
He coughs, spasming back to life, and she draws back her hand, as startled as he.

WOOD
(whispers)
Surprise.

EXT. BUS – CONTINUING
Giles looks out at the crater.

GILES

I don’t understand. What did this?

BUFFY
Spike.

They walk toward the edge of the crater, smoke in front of her, and we
REVERSE: SUNNYDALE is a smoking black crater. In front of it is a sign: WELCOME TO SUNNYDALE. After a beat,
the sign creakingly topples back into the crater.
We see everyone now, the girls milling about, the core group nearer the crater, and we push through the smoke
to see them: Buffy, Dawn, Giles, Xander, Willow, Faith coming out to join them. Keep pushing slowly in as the all
look out at the end of Sunnydale…

FAITH

Looks like the Hellmouth is
officially closed for business.

GILES

There is another one in Cleveland.
Not to spoil the moment…
XANDER
We saved the world.
WILLOW

We changed the world. I can feel
them, Buffy. All over. There are
Slayers awakening everywhere.

DAWN
We’ll have to find them.
WILLOW
We will.
GILES

Yes, because the mall was actually in
Sunnydale, so no hope of going there

tomorrow…
DAWN

We destroyed the Mall? I fought on
the wrong side…
XANDER

All those stores gone… The Gap,
Starbucks, Toys R Us… who will
remember these landmarks unless we
tell the world of them?

We’re still pushing in, closer and closer to Buffy, as everyone around her continues talking…

GILES

We have a lot of work ahead of us…

FAITH
Can I push him in?
WILLOW
You got my vote.
FAITH

I just wanna sleep, yo. For like a

week.
DAWN

I guess we all could. If we wanted to.

WILLOW

Yeah, the First is scrunched, so…
What do you think we should do, Buffy?

FAITH

Yeah, you’re not the one and only
chosen anymore. Just gotta live like
a person. How’s that feel?

She looks at Faith.

DAWN

Buffy? What are we gonna do now?

Buffy looks at them, looks back at the crater, and we are in full close up as she considers the question, a small
smile creeping onto her lips as she decides on her answer.

BLACK OUT.

END OF SHOW.

Transcripts

Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
1 INT. CHAPEL AT CEMETERY – NIGHT
There is a large, simple, gothic crucifix at the front of the chapel that can be seen by looking directly
down the central aisle. Spike embraces the crucifix, resting one arm over each side of the cross bar, and
resting his head in the corner of the vertex. His body is sizzling and smoke is rising from where it touches
the cross. A close-up of Buffy’s face shows that she is crying now. From where she stands, Spike’s
exhausted body hanging limply on the cross resembles Jesus (except the view is of Spike’s back).
Cut to:
2 INT. STRANGER’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Buffy is sitting on the edge of the bed. Spike is in front of her.
SPIKE
(kneels in front of her; looks into her eyes) And there’s only one thing I’ve ever been sure of: you.
Spike sits on the bed beside Buffy and puts his arm around her. She curls up on him, cuddling up to his chest as
he puts his arm around her shoulder, holding her head with his hand.
SPIKE (V.O.)
You’re the one, Buffy.
Cut to:
3 EXT. FOREST – NIGHT
Buffy and Faith are following a Bringer, chatting as they go.
FAITH
Trying to turn a bunch of little girls into an army…
Cut to:
3a EXT. BACKYARD AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – DAY
Pan out to show that the potential slayers are training in the backyard, being led by Kennedy.
POTENTIALS
Huh!

Cut to:
BUFFY
They’re potential slayers.
Cut to:
4 INT. LIVING ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Anya’s talking to the gang.
ANYA
But we’re dealing with a Big Bad that can be any dead person it wants.
Cut to:
5 INT. XANDER’S CAR – NIGHT
Xander is driving, and Dawn is unconscious in the seat beside him. She breathes and moves a little.
DAWN
(looks around) Where are we going?
Xander hands Dawn a letter. Dawn opens the letter and starts reading.
BUFFY (V.O.)
Dearest Dawn, don’t be angry with Xander. This isn’t the place for either of you.—
Without letting Xander see it, Dawn puts a stun gun up to Xander’s neck and presses the button, zapping Xander
and knocking him out.
Cut to:
6 INT. PYRAMIDAL TOMB – NIGHT
Buffy walks down into the tomb. It’s lit inside, although dimly, by torches, giving it an orange hue. Buffy
looks around cautiously. Buffy sees a very old woman with long white hair standing before her.
WOMAN
(admires the scythe) A scythe. Forged in secrecy for one like you.
BUFFY
Does this mean I can win?
The woman’s head cocks slightly to the side, and a cracking noise can be heard. The woman falls to the ground.
Buffy looks up and sees Caleb standing there. Caleb picks up the scythe.
CALEB
I was kind of hoping it’d go this way. (rears back with the scythe)
MAN (O.S.)
Hey! (punches Caleb, knocking him down)
Buffy looks up to see that it’s Angel standing there having knocked Caleb down. Buffy swings the scythe at
Caleb, slicing his stomach. He stumbles back, laughs heartily, wags his finger at her, and falls to the floor.
ANGEL
At least you could tell me you’re glad to see me. (walks toward Buffy)
Buffy drops the scythe to the floor and walks up to Angel, pressing herself against his body and kisses him
deeply on the lips.
Pan over to show Spike is in the tomb as well, hiding behind the pillar, watching them. Buffy/First is beside him,
whispering in his ear.

BUFFY/FIRST
That bitch.
End Recap.

The Start Of Episode
PROLOGUE:
7 INT. PYRAMIDAL TOMB – NIGHT
Resume. Angel and Buffy are kissing inside the tomb as Spike looks on from the shadows.
ANGEL
(pulls back from the kiss) Well, I guess that qualifies as “happy to see me.”
BUFFY
(looks into Angel’s eyes, smiling) Angel, what are you doing— (shakes her head) Don’t even. I just want to
bask. (looks into Angel’s eyes, smiling, for a few seconds, then snaps out of it) OK, I’m basked. What are you
doing here?
ANGEL
Not saving the damsel in distress, that’s for sure.
BUFFY
Oh, you know me. (picks up scythe) Not much with the damseling.
ANGEL
Got your share of distress, though. (walks to the wall)
BUFFY
You heard?
ANGEL
(picks up a file folder from a bench by the wall) I got coverage on the whole thing. It’s very gripping. It needs a
third act.
BUFFY
(shakes her head at him) You have to leave L.A.
ANGEL
It’s the First, right? The First evil. The power that tried to convince me to kill myself.
BUFFY
Yeah. It’s gotten a little more ambitious since then. It’s raising an army.
ANGEL
Yeah, well, it failed once, and I’m here to tell you—
Caleb stands up behind Angel and knocks Angel down by hitting him with a cat statue, sending him across the
floor. Caleb walks up to Buffy, black blood streaming from his eyes and nose.
CALEB
Are you ready to finish this, bitch?!
Cut to:
Opening Credits.

ACT I:
8 INT. PYRAMIDAL TOMB – NIGHT
Resume. Caleb, who’s still holding his cat statue, has just confronted Buffy in the tomb after having
knocked Angel out.
Caleb swings the cat statue at Buffy, but she blocks with the scythe and then falls to the ground. She swings at
him with the scythe, but he blocks with the cat statue. Caleb knocks Buffy to the ground, then throws the cat
statue at Buffy. Buffy stands, holding the scythe.
BUFFY
(breathing hard) OK…how many times do I have to kill you? Ballpark figure.
CALEB
You understand nothing.
Buffy swings at Caleb, but he grabs the scythe, holding it still, and punches Buffy in the face twice. He lifts
Buffy in the air, pressing her back against the low ceiling. Buffy struggles, and Caleb finally lets her fall to the
floor. He walks up to her slowly, then picks her up by her lapels.
CALEB
(through gritted teeth) You think you have power over me?
Buffy breaks free of his grip and kicks him, knocking him down to the floor.
CALEB
Stupid girl. (stands) You’ll never stop me. You don’t have the ba—
While Caleb gets to his feet, Buffy twirls the scythe and swings it up between his legs. Caleb’s eyes go wide.
BUFFY
Who does nowadays?
Caleb looks down incredulously at the scythe lodged in his body between his legs. Buffy swiftly pushes the
scythe up through his body.
ANGEL
(lying on the floor, regains consciousness and stands, angrily) OK, now I’m pissed. Where is he?
BUFFY
(looks to her right, then to her left, then at Angel) He had to split. (giggles devilishly)
BUFFY/FIRST
(whispering to Spike, who’s still watching Buffy from the shadows) Yeah, she needs you real bad.
Angel picks up the folder again and brings it to Buffy.
BUFFY
I’ll have the guys go through that. See if there’s anything new. Reliable source?
ANGEL
Not remotely.
BUFFY
Mm, any port in an apocalypse.
ANGEL
I, uh, brought something else as well.

Angel takes an amulet out of his pocket and holds it up for Buffy to see. It’s a 2-inch diameter round crystal
pendant in a silver starburst setting hung from a coarse silver chain.
BUFFY
(shakes her head) I can already tell you, I have nothing that goes with that.
ANGEL
It’s not for you.
BUFFY
Splainy?
ANGEL
I don’t know everything. It’s very powerful and probably very dangerous. It has a purifying power, a cleansing
power, possibly scrubbing bubbles. The translation is, uh—anyway, it bestows strength to the right person who
wears it.
BUFFY
And the right person is?
ANGEL
Someone ensouled, but stronger than human. A champion. As in me.
BUFFY
Or me.
ANGEL
No. I don’t know nearly enough about this to risk you wearing it. Besides, you got that real cool axe-thing going
for you.
Spike walks out the back without being noticed.
BUFFY
So you’re gonna be with me in this.
ANGEL
Shoulder to shoulder. I’m yours.
BUFFY
No.
ANGEL
No, what?
BUFFY
No. You’re not gonna be in this fight. (walks away)
ANGEL
(cuts her off) Why the hell not?
BUFFY
‘Cause I can’t risk you.
ANGEL
You need me in this.
BUFFY
No, I need you gone.

ANGEL
Why?
BUFFY
If I lose, if this thing gets past Sunnydale, then it’s days—maybe hours—before the rest of the world goes. I
need a second front, and I need you to run it.
ANGEL
OK… (crosses his arms) that’s one reason. What’s the other?
BUFFY
(walks out of the tomb) There is no other.
Cut to:
9 EXT. PYRAMIDAL TOMB – NIGHT
Buffy walks out of the tomb. Angel follows her.
ANGEL
Is it Spike? (Buffy stops walking, turns to face Angel) You’re not telling me something. And his scent, I
remember it pretty well.
BUFFY
You vampires. Did anybody ever tell you the whole smelling people thing’s a little gross? (walks away)
ANGEL
(follows) Is he your boyfriend?
BUFFY
Is that your business?
ANGEL
You in love with him? OK, maybe I’m outta line, but this is kind of a curve ball for me. I mean, we are talking
about Spike here.
BUFFY
It’s different. He’s different. He has a soul now.
ANGEL
(stops) Oh. (looks up) Well.
BUFFY
What?
ANGEL
That’s great. (mumbling to himself) Everyone’s got a soul now.
BUFFY
He’ll make a difference.
ANGEL
(mumbling) You know, I started it. The whole having a soul. Before it was all the cool new thing.
BUFFY
Oh, my God. Are you 12?
ANGEL
I’m getting the brush off for Captain Peroxide. It doesn’t necessarily bring out the champion in me.

BUFFY
You’re not getting the brush off. Are you just gonna come here and go all Dawson on me every time I have a
boyfriend?
ANGEL
Aha! (points) Boyfriend!
BUFFY
He’s not. But…he is in my heart.
ANGEL
That’ll end well. (walks away, leans on a tombstone)
BUFFY
What was the highlight of our relationship? When you broke up with me or when I killed you? I’m well aware
of my stellar history with guys… (sighs, leans beside Angel) And, no, I don’t see fat grandchildren in the offing
with Spike, but I don’t think that really matters right now. (chuckles) You know, in the midst of all this insanity,
a couple things are actually starting to make sense. And the guy thing— (sighs) I always feared there was
something wrong with me, you know, because I couldn’t make it work. But maybe I’m not supposed to.
ANGEL
Because you’re the slayer?
BUFFY
(looks at Angel) Because—OK, I’m cookie dough. I’m not done baking. I’m not finished becoming whoever the
hell it is I’m gonna turn out to be. I make it through this, and the next thing, and the next thing, and maybe one
day I turn around and realize I’m ready. I’m cookies. And then, you know, if I want someone to eat— (eyes go
wide as she catches herself) or enjoy warm, delicious cookie me, then…that’s fine. That’ll be then. When I’m
done.
ANGEL
Any thoughts on who might enjoy— (sighs, irritated) Do I have to go with the cookie analogy?
BUFFY
I’m not really thinking that far ahead. That’s kind of the point.
ANGEL
(hands the amulet to Buffy) I’ll go start working on the second front. Make sure I don’t have to use it. (walks
away)
BUFFY
(calls after him) Angel. (he turns to look at her) I do… sometimes think that far ahead.
ANGEL
Sometimes is something. (smiles, walks away)
BUFFY
Be a long time coming. Years, if ever.
ANGEL
(shrugs) I ain’t getting any older. (walks away)
Cut to:
10 INT. DINING ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Dawn is waiting by the front door when Buffy walks in. Buffy’s surprised to see her. Dawn kicks Buffy in
the shin.
BUFFY
Ow.

DAWN
Dumbass.
Buffy looks over at Xander, who’s in the dining room with Anya, Giles, and Willow.
XANDER
Don’t look at me. This is a Summers’ thing. It’s all very violent.
BUFFY
(looks at Dawn) If you get killed, I’m telling. (walks into the dining room; Dawn follows)
WILLOW
Did you find out anything about the scythe?
BUFFY
It slices, dices, and makes julienne preacher.
GILES
Caleb?
BUFFY
I cut him in half.
WILLOW
All right!
ANYA
He had that coming.
XANDER
Hey, party in my eye socket and everyone’s invited. (everyone stares at Xander) Sometimes I shouldn’t say
words.
Cut to:
11 INT. BASEMENT AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Spike is in the basement punching a punching bag when Buffy walks down the stairs.
SPIKE
So…where’s tall, dark and forehead?
BUFFY
(rolls her eyes) Let me guess. You can smell him.
SPIKE
Yeah, that and I also used my enhanced vampire eyeballs to watch you kissing him.
BUFFY
(awkwardly) It was…a hello.
SPIKE
Most people don’t use their tongues to say hello. Or I guess they do, but—
BUFFY
There were no tongues. Besides, he’s gone.
SPIKE
Oh, just popped by for a quickie, then?

BUFFY
(walks away) Good, good. I haven’t had quite enough jealous vampire crap for one night.
SPIKE
He wears lifts, you know.
Buffy looks over at the punching bag that Spike was hitting and sees something has been taped to it: a sketch
drawn in black marker on white paper, shows hair that sticks straight up, X’s for eyes and fangs on the frowny
face. Buffy rolls her eyes at the representation of Angel.
BUFFY
You know, one of these days I’m just gonna put you 2 in a room and let you wrestle it out.
SPIKE
(rifling through an empty cigarette package) No problem at this end. (throws the package away in disgust)
BUFFY
(her eyes widen with excitement) There could be oil of some kind involved.
SPIKE
(walks up to Buffy) Where’s the trinket?
BUFFY
The who-ket?
SPIKE
The pretty necklace your sweetie-bear gave you. The one with all the power. I believe it’s mine now.
BUFFY
How do you figure?
SPIKE
Someone with a soul, but more than human? Angel meant to wear it, that means I’m the qualified party. (holds
out his hands)
BUFFY
It’s volatile. We don’t know—
SPIKE
You’ll be needing someone strong to bear it, then. You planning on giving it to Andrew?
BUFFY
(looks at the amulet, then at Spike) Angel said the amulet was meant to be worn by a champion.
Spike looks down, disappointed, but Buffy walks forward and hands it to him.
SPIKE
Been called a lot of things in my time.
BUFFY
(coyly) Faith still has my room.
SPIKE
Well, you’re not staying here. You can’t buy me off with shiny beads and sweet talk. You got Angel breath. I’m
not gonna just let you whack me back and forth like a rubber ball. I’ve got my pride, you know.
BUFFY
I understand. (turns to walk away)

SPIKE
(cuts her off) Clearly you don’t, ’cause the whole “having my pride” thing was just a smokescreen.
BUFFY
(sighs with relief) Oh, thank God.
SPIKE
I don’t know what I would have done if you’d have gone up those stairs.
Later, Buffy and Spike are lying together on the cot, fully clothed. Spike has his arm around Buffy and she
fondles his hand. He rolls over, removing his arm from her, and she sits up. She stands and paces around the
basement. She is looking out the window, staring at the night sky when Caleb/First appears.
CALEB/FIRST
Pretty, ain’t it?
BUFFY
You’re not him.
CALEB/FIRST
No, you killed him right and proper. Terrible loss. This man was my good right arm. ‘Course, it don’t pain me
too much. Don’t need an arm. Got an army.
BUFFY
An army of vampires. However will I fight—
CALEB/FIRST
Every day our numbers swell. But then you do have an army of your own. Some thirty-odd pimply-faced girls,
don’t know the pointy end of a stake. (feigns concern) Maybe I should call this off.
BUFFY
Have you ever considered a cool name? I mean, since you’re incorporeal and basically powerless. How about
“The Taunter?” Strikes fear in the heart—
CALEB/FIRST
I will overrun this Earth. And when my army outnumbers the humans on this Earth, the scales will tip and I will
be made flesh.
BUFFY
Talk on. I’m not afraid of you.
CALEB/FIRST
(rolls eyes) Then why aren’t you asleep in your dead lover’s arms? (looks over at Spike) ‘Cause he can’t help
you. Nor Faith, nor your friends, certainly not your wanna-slay brigade. None of those girlies will ever know
real power unless you’re dead. You know the drill: (morphs into Buffy’s form)
BUFFY/FIRST
Into every generation, a slayer is born. One girl in all the world. She alone will have the strength and skill to—
There’s that word again. What you are. How you’ll die. Alone. Where’s your snappy comeback?
BUFFY
You’re right.
BUFFY/FIRST
Hmm. Not your best.
SPIKE
(talking in his sleep) I’m drowning in footwear! (sits up with a start; Buffy turns to look at him and Buffy/First
disappears) Weird dream. (notices Buffy standing in the middle of the room) Buffy? Is something wrong?

BUFFY
No. Yeah. I just realized something. Something that really never occurred to me before. We’re gonna win.
Fade to black.
ACT II:
12 INT. BUFFY’S ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – DAY
Close-up of Dawn, Xander, Anya, and Willow staring incredulously at Buffy. Pan out to show that we
were seeing their reflection in the mirror beside Buffy. Buffy’s looking at all of them.
BUFFY
What do you think?
XANDER
That depends. Are you in any way…kidding?
BUFFY
You don’t think it’s a good idea?
FAITH
(standing on the opposite side of the mirror from Buffy) It’s pretty radical, B.
GILES
(sitting by the window) It’s a lot more than that. (stands) Buffy, what you said, it—it flies in the face of
everything we’ve ever—every generation has ever done in the fight against evil. (smiles) I think it’s bloody
brilliant.
BUFFY
You mean that?
GILES
If you want my opinion.
BUFFY
I really do.
WILLOW
Whoa, hey. Not to poop on the party here, but I’m the guy that’s gonna have to pull this thing off.
FAITH
It is beaucoup d’mojo.
WILLOW
This goes beyond anything I’ve ever done. It’s a total loss of control, and not in a nice, wholesome, my
girlfriend has a pierced tongue kind of way.
Dawn looks at Willow. Giles looks away.
BUFFY
I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think you could do it.
WILLOW
I—I’m not sure that I’m stable enough.
GILES
You can do this, Willow. We’ll get the coven on the line, and we’ll find out how they can help.
DAWN
Oh! (nods) “Pierced tongue.”

BUFFY
(panicky) Dawn needs to do a research thing.
GILES
(quickly) Yes, you do.
DAWN
(rolls her eyes) It’s cool. (stands, walks out) Watcher junior to the library.
GILES
I’ll go dig up my sources. Quite literally, actually. (walks out of the room)
ANYA
(to Xander) Come on, let’s go assemble the cannon fodder.
XANDER
That’s not what we’re calling them, sweetie. (walks out)
ANYA
(walks out) Not to their faces. What, am I insensitive?
Buffy hands the scythe over to Willow. Faith is standing beside Buffy.
Cut to:
13 INT. LIVING ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – DAY
Buffy addresses a room full of potentials and her friends.
BUFFY
I hate this. I hate being here. I hate that you have to be here. I hate that there’s evil, and that I was chosen to
fight it. I wish, a whole lot of the time, that I hadn’t been. I know a lot of you wish I hadn’t been either.
(Kennedy and Rona look away) But this isn’t about wishes. This is about choices. I believe we can beat this evil.
Not when it comes, not when its army is ready, now. Tomorrow morning I’m opening the seal. I’m going down
into the hellmouth, and I’m finishing this once and for all. Right now you’re asking yourself, “what makes this
different? What makes us anything more than a bunch of girls being picked off one by one?” It’s true none of
you have the power that Faith and I do. So here’s the part where you make a choice.
Cut to:
14 INT. BASEMENT AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Faith and Robin Wood are moving furniture around.
ROBIN
It’s one hell of a risky idea.
FAITH
Buffy’s wacky that way.
ROBIN
Yeah. There’s one more vent right by the stairs. We block that, they got no sewer access, should drive them
straight up into the school proper.
FAITH
That’s assuming they get past us.
ROBIN
Which, no offense, I am.
FAITH
Come on, you gotta have a little Faith.

ROBIN
(under his breath) I think I’ve had my share, thanks.
FAITH
Well, I trundled right into that one, didn’t I? Look, I’m sorry if it seemed like I was blowing you off the other
day. I was just trying to, you know, blow you off.
ROBIN
Yeah, you know what, I figured that one out all by myself.
FAITH
It’s nothing personal. It’s just after I get bouncy with a guy, there’s not that much more I need
to know about him.
ROBIN
That’s bleak.
FAITH
Way of the world.
ROBIN
That’s good to know ’cause for a second there I thought it was more defensive, isolationist slayer crap.
FAITH
(laughs) And he comes out swinging.
ROBIN
Faith, there’s a whole world out there that you don’t even know about, and a lot of the men in it are pretty decent
guys. They’d surprise you.
FAITH
(shrugs) Guy looks at me, let’s just say his priorities shift.
ROBIN
Why, because you’re so hot?
FAITH
It’s what it is, yo.
ROBIN
Oh, please. I am so much prettier than you are. (Faith seems taken aback) Oh, and, uh, for the record, our little
encounter didn’t exactly change my world.
FAITH
You’re tripping! That was rock ’em, sock ’em!
ROBIN
No, no, no, no. It was—it was—it was nice enough, you know, and you’re—you’re very, um… mm, enthused,
and I think with a little more experience—
FAITH
Dude, I got mad skills.
ROBIN
Yeah, of course. Let’s finish up.
FAITH
No, hell with that. We’re going again, baby. (starts unbuckling her belt) You’re gonna learn a little respect here,
pal.

ROBIN
Faith— (chuckles) Make me a deal, all right? We live through this, you give me the chance to surprise you.
FAITH
What would be the surprise?
ROBIN
(looks at her) You do know the meaning of the word, right?
FAITH
Fine. (rebuckles her belt) Deal.
ROBIN
Good enough.
FAITH
No way you’re prettier than me.
ROBIN
A little bit, yeah.
Cut to:
15 INT. WILLOW’S ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Willow’s working intently at her desk while Kennedy stretches herself across the bed behind her, playing
with Willow’s hair.
WILLOW
I really wish she hadn’t said that about me.
KENNEDY
What, the thing Buffy said? I think it’s true. (Willow squeaks with uncertainty) I’ll be with you. To keep you
grounded.
WILLOW
Yeah, well, you might have to keep me stab-ded, if I go to the bad place.
KENNEDY
(sits up, looks at Willow) You’re saying I might have to kill you.
WILLOW
I am.
KENNEDY
Bite me.
WILLOW
I will. I mean, I do… mean it. The darkest place I’ve ever been, this is what lies beyond that. This is too
important for me to—
KENNEDY
Buffy believes in you.
WILLOW
You know, Buffy: sweet girl, not that bright.
KENNEDY
Hey, I’m the first one to call her out when she’s not making sense. In fact, this may have escaped your keen
notice, but I’m kind of a brat. I’ve always sort of gotten my way. So you’re gonna make it through this, no matter
how dark it gets. Because now… you’re my way.

They kiss.
WILLOW
(back to her paperwork) I better go over this again.
Kennedy cuddles on Willow while she works.
Cut to:
16 INT. DINING ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Giles and Xander are looking intently at a map that’s laid out on the table.
GILES
I’m—I’m—I’m all turned around. You’re here?
XANDER
By the pillar, yeah. I’m protecting this area.
GILES
That puts me over by the door. Demons around the perimeter— Right! I open the door.
Pan over to show Andrew is also at the table, but he’s wearing a red hooded cloak.
ANDREW
(reading from a book) You go through the door and are confronted by Trogdor the Burninator.
GILES
Oh, bugger it. Fight. (rolls dice, sips wine)
ANDREW
Adios to 5 hit points. Trogdor has badly wounded you.
GILES
Well, wait a minute. What about my… (puts on glasses) bag of illusions?
ANDREW
(scoffs) Illusions against a Burninator? Silly, silly british man. (Giles sips his wine again)
AMANDA
I invoke a time flux on Trogdor.
ANDREW
(looks at Amanda) Step down, girlfriend, you can’t just—
AMANDA
Ninth level sorcerer, and I carry the emerald chalice. Trogdor is frozen in time. Deal with it. (writes something
down)
XANDER
Smackdown on Red Riding Hood. This could get ugly.
GILES
Could it possibly get uglier? I used to be a highly respected watcher, and now I’m a wounded dwarf with the
mystical strength of a doily. I just wish I could sleep.
AMANDA
What kind of person could sleep on a night like this?
XANDER
(looks over at Anya, who’s passed out on the table in the chair beside him) Only the crazy ones.(rubs Anya’s

hair as she snores)
Cut to:
17 EXT. FRONT PORCH AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Buffy’s out on her front porch, alone, looking up at the night sky.
Cut to:
18 INT. BASEMENT AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Spike holds out the amulet in front of him, letting it dangle from it’s chain, and stares at it thoughtfully.
Buffy walks down the stairs. Spike stands and faces her.
Cut to:
19 EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Zoomed in on a the front of a yellow school bus, the camera pans up to show the campus beyond it. A car
has been driven onto campus and crashed into a palm tree. Papers and boxes are strewn all over the
grounds. Zoom in on the sign that reads “Sunnydale High School.” Pan over quickly to show Principal
Robin Wood leading Faith, Dawn, Giles, and the others into the school.
ROBIN
Welcome to Sunnydale High.
Cut to:
20 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Robin leads the gang into the school as if instructing a class on a field trip.
ROBIN
There’s no running in the halls, no yelling, no gum chewing. Apart from that, there’s only one rule. (stops
walking, turns to look at the crowd) If they move, kill them.
BUFFY
OK, potentials, in the basement. Follow Faith and Spike.
Faith and Spike leave; potentials follow.
XANDER
If you have to go to the bathroom, it’s to your left. If you don’t have to go to the bathroom, picture what you’re
about to face. Better to go now.
ROBIN
Willow, my office is straight through there. (points)
BUFFY
It’s right over the seal.
KENNEDY
I’ll start getting you set up. (takes the bag from Willow)
WILLOW
Thanks.
ROBIN
OK, civilians. The vampires get upstairs, we have 3 areas they could get through to another building and then
down into the sewers. (points) Down the hall in the atrium, the north hall here, and the primary target, through
the lounge straight to the science building. Now odds are, most of them will head there.

GILES
Teams of 2 then. I suggest you and I take the lounge.
ROBIN
I concur.
BUFFY
Xander, I want you with Dawn.
XANDER
I concur.
DAWN
We’ll check out the atrium.
ANYA
So that leaves me and the dungeon master in the north hall?
ANDREW
We will defend it with our very lives.
ANYA
Yes, we will defend it with his very life.
XANDER
And don’t be afraid to use him as a human shield.
ANYA
Good, yes, thanks. (nods)
ANDREW
I just want to say how proud I am to die for this very special cause with you guys. (takes a paper out of his
pocket, reads) There’s some, um—there’s people I’d like to thank, both good and evil. Um, a shout out to my
brother Tucker, who gave me the inspiration to summon demons and also—
ANYA
Nobody cares, you little monkey. (they walk away)
DAWN
I’m gonna check out our field of engagement. (walks away)
BUFFY
(goes after Dawn) Dawn…
DAWN
(turns to face her, resolutely) No. Anything you say is gonna sound like good-bye. (walks away)
Buffy walks to the group still standing in the hallway. It’s only Willow, Xander and Giles now. Buffy joins them.
They stare at each other in a heavy silence a moment before Buffy breaks the ice.
BUFFY
So, what do you guys want to do tomorrow?
WILLOW
Nothing strenuous.
XANDER
Well, mini-golf is always the first thing that comes to mind.

GILES
I think we can do better than that.
BUFFY
I was thinking about shopping. As per usual.
WILLOW
Oh! There’s an Arden B. in the new mall!
XANDER
I could use a few items.
GILES
Well, now aren’t we gonna discuss this? Save the world to go to the mall?
BUFFY
I’m having a wicked shoe craving.
XANDER
Aren’t you on the patch?
WILLOW
Those never work.
GILES
Here I am, invisible to the eye…
Xander, Willow, and Buffy walk down the hall together away from Giles.
XANDER
See, I need a new look. It’s this whole eye patch thing.
BUFFY
Oh, you could go with full black secret agent look.
WILLOW
Or the puffy shirt, pirate slash—
GILES
(turns) The earth is definitely doomed. (walks away)
Buffy, Xander and Willow are walking down the hall together in silence. When they pass the Principal’s office,
Willow steps in. Xander and Buffy continue walking. When they pass a corridor, Xander grabs Buffy’s hand and
squeezes it before walking away down the corridor. Buffy walks on down the hall by herself.
Cut to:
21 INT. BASEMENT AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Buffy joins Faith and the other potentials in the basement room where the Seal of Danzalthar is located.
They form a circle around the edge of the seal. Buffy stands beside Faith.
FAITH
You first, B. (hands Buffy a knife)
Buffy sighs and takes the knife from Faith and uses it to cut the palm of her hand so that it bleeds. She hands the
knife to Faith. Moments later, after all the girls have cut their hands, they all hold their cut hands out over the
seal, activating it. It opens and parts sink into the ground forming a staircase into the hellmouth. Buffy goes in
first, followed by Faith.
Cut to:

22 INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Willow is sitting on the floor of the Principal’s office with a semi-circle of white candles lit in front of her.
There are other candles in the room as well. Kennedy sits across from Willow, watching her.
WILLOW
They should be in place. (sits back with her hands on her knees) OK, magic time. You ready to, heh heh, kill
me?
KENNEDY
Starting to be.
WILLOW
Good. Fun. Great. Brace yourself.
KENNEDY
(whispering) Come on, red. Make it happen.
Cut to:
23 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Buffy, Spike, Faith and the other girls have climbed down through the seal into the hellmouth.
SPIKE
(looking at the amulet worn around his neck) Not to be a buzzkill, love, but my fabulous accessory isn’t exactly
tingling with power.
BUFFY
(psyching herself up as she looks around slack-jawed) I’m not worried.
SPIKE
I’m getting zero juice here, and I look like Elizabeth Taylor.
FAITH
Cheer up, Liz. Willow’s big spell doesn’t work, it won’t matter what you wear.
Buffy, Faith, Spike and the others walk forward to the edge of a cliff where they can look out and see thousands
upon thousands of Turok-Han below them on the floor of the hellmouth.
BUFFY
I’m not worried.
The Turok-Han are growling and making noise as they mob below them. Spike backs up.
BUFFY
I’m not worried.
RONA
Really? ‘Cause I’m flashing back to Xander’s whole bathroom speech.
AMANDA
(frightened) Buffy—
BUFFY
I’m not worried…as long as Willow can work her spell before they— (the Turok-Han look up at Buffy and gang)
see us.
The snarling Turok-Han army rushes toward the cliff where Buffy and gang are positioned.
Fade to black.

ACT III:
24 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
As the Turok-Han army advances toward Buffy and gang, Buffy holds her ground.
BUFFY
(under her breath) Willow…
Cut to:
25 INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Willow is performing a spell while holding onto the scythe laid out in front of her. Suddenly, she’s
overcome with power. She looks up, as the scythe and Willow start to glow with a bright white light.
WILLOW
(breathlessly) Oh…my…Goddess…
Cut to:
26 INT. LIVING ROOM AT BUFFY’S HOUSE – DAY
FLASHBACK: Buffy is addressing a living room full of potentials and her friends.
BUFFY
So here’s the part where you make a choice: What if you could have that power…now? In every generation, one
slayer is born… because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were
powerful men. This woman (points to Willow) is more powerful than all of them combined. (Willow whimpers)
So I say we change the rule. I say my power…
Cut to:
26a INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Kennedy sits up smiling and confident.
BUFFY (V.O.)
…should be our power.
Cut to:
26b INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Vi, Rona, Amanda close their eyes and breathe in with a start.
BUFFY (V.O.)
Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny.
Cut to:
26c MONTAGE
EXT. BASEBALL DIAMOND – DAY
A young woman stands at the plate staring at the
pitcher, waiting to bat. She looks a little nervous.

BUFFY (V.O.)
From now on, every girl in the world
who might be a slayer…

INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY – DAY
A young woman breathes heavily as she leans on her
locker for support.

will be a slayer.

INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY
A young woman is lying across the floor, having
fallen out of her chair.

Every girl who could have the power…

INT. DINING ROOM – DAY
In a Japanese-style dining room, a young woman
stands up at family dinner.

will have the power… can stand up,

INT. BASEMENT – DAY
A young woman grabs the wrist of a man who’s
trying to slap her face, preventing him.

will stand up.

EXT. BASEBALL DIAMOND – DAY
The girl at the plate changes from nervous to
confident, smiling as she waits for the pitch.

Slayers… every one of us. Make your
choice. Are you ready to be strong?

Cut to:
26d INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
The scythe is glowing white in Willow’s hands.
Cut to:
27 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
The Turok-Han rush toward Buffy and team as they stand on the cliff’s edge waiting for battle.
VI
(confidently) These guys are dust.
The Turok-Han army rushes Buffy’s gang. Buffy fights them off with kicks and punches as usual, but the other
potentials have super strength now as well. Vi jumps and kicks a Turok-Han down. Rona punches a Turok-Han
in the face, knocking it down. Faith fights one off. Amanda stakes a Turok-Han through the heart. Vi beheads a
Turok-Han.
Cut to:
28 INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Kennedy, smiling at her newfound power, looks around and stops in amazement when she sees Willow.
KENNEDY
Willow?
Willow’s hair is completely white, and she’s still glowing with white light from the spell. Willow’s facial
expression is one of divine ecstasy as she looks heaven-ward. Willow pants as the power runs through her. When
the scythe stops glowing, so does Willow. Willow’s hair is back to normal, but she herself is still recovering from
the incredible experience of that spell.
KENNEDY
You…are a goddess.
WILLOW
(smiles, weakly) And you’re a slayer. Get this to Buffy.
Willow hands the scythe to Kennedy, who takes it and runs out of the office. Willow sits there, panting, then
collapses to her side, still smiling.
WILLOW
Ha! That was nifty.
Cut to:
29 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Buffy fights off the Turok-Han, who are starting to out number Buffy’s gang. Faith and Spike and the
others are still fighting them as well. Kennedy runs down into the hellmouth carrying the scythe.

KENNEDY
Buffy! Catch! (throws the scythe to Buffy)
Buffy catches the scythe and is immediately able to kill the Turok-Han faster, than before, dusting them quickly.
A Turok-Han attacks Kennedy, who is able to fend them off with ease now.
KENNEDY
I could get used to this.
The battle is going well for Buffy’s gang as they are able to keep up with the endless number of Turok-Han that
come for them. Vi goes after one of the with intensity we’ve never before seen in her. Buffy uses the scythe to
behead a Turok-Han. As their numbers increase, some of the Turok-Han are able to get past Buffy’s gang and go
up through the hellmouth into the school.
Cut to:
30 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Andrew and Anya are defending an exit together, each with a sword.
ANDREW
I think they’re coming. (hides behind Anya)
ANYA
Oh, God. I’m terrified. I didn’t think. I mean, I— I just figured you’d be terrified, and I would be sarcastic about
it.
ANDREW
Picture happy things… a lake, candy canes, bunnies.
ANYA
(gets angry) Bunnies! Floppy, hoppy… (holds up her sword, ready to attack) bunnies.
Cut to:
31 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Giles and Robin are defending an exit together. The Turok-Han flood the hallways. They far outnumber
Robin and Giles, who manage to hold their own. Giles slices one of the Turok-Han across the neck as
Robin punches and kicks them.
Cut to:
32 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Anya fights valiantly as the Turok-Han enter her corridor. Andrew backs away as a Turok-Han rushes
him, snarling.
ANDREW
I have swimmer’s ear!
The Turok-Han pushes Andrew against the wall. Anya dusts two Turok-Han in a row.
Cut to:
33 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Spike is fighting off Turok-Han alongside the others when he steps back and looks down at the amulet
around his neck. He touches the amulet, but it burns his hand.
SPIKE
Buffy! Whatever this thing does, I think it’s— (Spike winces and moans in pain)

BUFFY
(to the girls) Keep the line together! Drive them to the edge! We can’t let them do—
Buffy looks down to see that a Turok-Han has stabbed her with a sword from behind, piercing her abdomen. She
stumbles forward and collapses to the ground, face-first.
Fade to black.
ACT IV:
34 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Faith and the other girls are still fighting off the Turok-Han. Faith notices Buffy lying on the floor.
FAITH
Buffy! (goes to Buffy’s side)
BUFFY
(leans up on her elbows, weakly) Hold the line. (hands the scythe to Faith)
Faith takes the scythe and goes back into the battle as Buffy stays in place on the floor, grunting in pain.
Cut to:
35 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Xander and Dawn guard their exit as the Turok-Han make their way toward them. Dawn holds a sword,
but stays cautiously away from the fight as Xander engages the demons full-on. Xander can hold them
back, but not kill them, so Dawn pulls a rope, dropping a sandbag and opening a skylight window in the
ceiling, flooding the room with sunlight and causing the Turok-Han to burn and dust in front of them.
XANDER
(to the piles of dust) We call that the greenhouse effect. Very dangerous—
Another Turok-Han attacks Xander, knocking him down. Dawn goes to help fight it off.
Cut to:
36 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Bringers have made their way to the fight and are attacking Andrew. Anya fights them off, but there are
too many. While she stabs one with her sword, another slices diagonally though her torso from behind,
killing her.
Cut to:
37 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Bringers have found Giles and Robin as well. While they fight the Bringers, one stabs Robin in the
stomach. Giles kills the Bringer that stabbed Robin, then catches Robin in his arm as he falls toward
Giles.
Cut to:
38 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Spike continues fighting the Turok-Han, as do Faith and the others. A ground of Turok-Han attacks
Faith, and she calls out.
FAITH
Rona! (throws the scythe to Rona)
Rona uses the scythe to mow down a couple of Turok-Han. Buffy is still lying on the ground weak and wounded.

BUFFY/FIRST
Oh no…(looks down at Buffy’s wound reflected on its body) ow! Mommy, this mortal wound is all…itchy. You
pulled a nice trick. You came pretty close to smacking me down. What more do you want?
BUFFY
(through gritted teeth) I want you… (sits up) to get out of my face. (stands)
Rona sees Buffy standing and throws the scythe to Buffy. Buffy catches it and swings it with a mighty force,
knocking three Turok-Han off the cliff at once. Faith find renewed strength and kicks her assailants off of her as
well. Faith takes out a few Turok-Han, as does another slayer. Vi takes out one after another after another.
Kennedy disarms one and dusts another. Buffy knocks one off the cliff and kills one with the scythe. Spike gasps
and stumbles backward away from the fight as he clutches his chest, then his burned hand.
SPIKE
Oh, bollocks.
A bright blue light shoots up from the amulet, knocking a hole in the ceiling, going up through the floor of the
Principal’s office past Willow and through to the open sky. The light turns a warm orange color.
SPIKE
Buffy!
BUFFY
Spike!
Before Buffy can go to his side, the amulet refracts the orange light out into the hellmouth like rays of sunshine

—but with concentrated intensity like a laser. Buffy stares at Spike. As the amulet works its magic, the Turok-
Han are dusting throughout the hellmouth. The ground starts shaking. Faith calls out to the others.

FAITH
Everybody out, now!
Everyone rushes to the stairs that lead up to the seal. Buffy runs to Spike’s side.
SPIKE
(amazed) I can feel it, Buffy.
BUFFY
What?
SPIKE
(looks at her) My soul. It’s really there. Kind of stings.
Cut to:
39 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
The girls rush out of the basement up to the hallway. They go past Andrew. A Bringer is hovering over
Andrew, but it falls back revealing Andrew’s sword in its chest.
ANDREW
(in shock) What… why?
One of the girls helps Andrew to his feet.
Cut to:
40 EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Giles is helping the wounded Robin walk. As the ground starts to shake even more, they see the school
bus sitting out front.

ROBIN
The bus. Get them on the bus.
GILES
(lets go of Robin, and yells after the girls who are coming out of the building) Everybody, this way!
Cut to:
41 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Kennedy helps the weakened Willow walk. Xander and Dawn are making their way out of the building as
well. As the building falls down around them, Xander screams out for Anya.
XANDER
Anya! Anya!
He doesn’t see her body lying limp and lifeless on the floor beneath some rubble. Dawn pulls him away toward
the exit.
Cut to:
42 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Buffy and Spike are the only ones left in the hellmouth. Spike is still glowing from the amulet, sending
rays of light out into the hellmouth. Buffy stands in front of him, staring, still holding her scythe.
SPIKE
Go on, then.
BUFFY
No. No, you’ve done enough. You could still—
SPIKE
No, you’ve beat them back. It’s for me to do the cleanup.
The walls are crumbling around them.
FAITH
(calls down to Buffy) Buffy, come on!
SPIKE
Gotta move, lamb. I think it’s fair to say school’s out for bloody summer.
BUFFY
(worried) Spike!
SPIKE
I mean it! I gotta do this. (holds out his hand to stop her)
Buffy laces her fingers through Spike’s, and they burst into flame together.
BUFFY
(softly, looks into his eyes) I love you.
SPIKE
No, you don’t. But thanks for saying it. (another earthquake; Buffy lets go of his hand) Now go! (Buffy runs up
the stairs) I wanna see how it ends.
Cut to:
43 EXT. SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
The school building explodes. Faith runs out from the cloud of smoke and jumps into the bus. The bus

drives off with all the survivors, except Spike and Buffy. Dawn stares ut the back window of the bus.
Cut to:
44 INT. HALLWAY AT SUNNYDALE HIGH – DAY
Buffy runs through the hallway, still carrying the scythe, avoiding the debris that has fallen to the floor as
well as what’s still falling as the ground continues to shake. The door is blocked, so Buffy goes upstairs.
Cut to:
45 INT. HELLMOUTH – DAY
Spike stands in the crumbling hellmouth with light shining down on him from above, grinning from ear
to ear and laughing as he burns up from the sunlight. He dusts slowly—first his skin singes, then his
muscles, then his bones—then he’s gone. The hellmouth crumbles in around him.
Cut to:
46 INT. SCHOOL BUS – DAY
Those who are less injured tend to the badly injured survivors on the bus. Vi tends to Rona. Xander takes
care of an Asian girl.
VI
(grabs Rona’s face) Look at me! This is nothing! Stay awake! This is nothing!
ANDREW
(staring straight ahead, in shock) Why didn’t I die?
Dawn looks out the back window of the bus, searching.
Buffy is running along the rooftops of the shopping mall as the bus drives down the street. The buildings are
collapsing behind her as she tries to catch up to the bus. She leaps from building to building, still carrying the
scythe, then finally jumps toward the street, landing on the bus.
Widen the shot vertically to show that the whole town is collapsing in on itself, being sucked back into the
Earth.
FAITH
(looks out the window) Ease off. We’re clear.
The bus screeches to a halt with Buffy still clinging to the top. Principal Wood, who was driving even though he
was wounded, turns the ignition off, leans back in his chair and sighs.
Cut to:
47 EXT. SCHOOL BUS – DAY
Buffy jumps down off the top of the school bus and looks around. Dawn opens the emergency exit door at
the back of the bus and jumps down to give Buffy a warm hug.
GILES
(looking around down the street behind them) I don’t understand. Who did this?
BUFFY
Spike.
As everyone who’s able to gets off the bus, Buffy walks away from the bus a few feet toward Sunnydale, which is
now a vast cavern. The “Welcome to Sunnydale” sign still stands, perched precariously on the edge of the
canyon. The sign teeters a little before falling backwards into the pit that used to be its city.
XANDER
(walks up to Andrew as he gets off the bus) So, did you see?

ANDREW
(can’t look at Xander) I—I was scared. I’m sorry.
XANDER
Did you see what happened? I mean, was she…
ANDREW
(looks at Xander) She was incredible. She died saving my life.
XANDER
(puts his hand on Andrew’s shoulder, nods) That’s my girl. Always doing the stupid thing.
Andrew smiles a little. Xander walks away toward Buffy.
Cut to:
48 INT. SCHOOL BUS – DAY
Faith walks up to Robin Wood, who’s slumped over in the driver’s seat.
FAITH
It’s not bad. You just sit here. I’ll get someone to—
ROBIN
Hey… did we— did we make it?
FAITH
(kneels to be on eye-level with Robin) We made it. We won.
Robin smiles and tries to laugh, but he’s very weak. Still looking at Faith, he goes silent and stops breathing.
Faith gets concerned, pauses, then reaches toward his face to close his eyelids. Robin coughs and sputters a
moment, then smiles weakly at her.
ROBIN
(breathing heavily) Surprise.
Faith lets out a sigh of relief and a smile. Vi goes to Robin’s side, and Faith steps off the bus to join the others.
Cut to:
49 EXT. SCHOOL BUS – DAY
Buffy is still staring at the canyon that once was Sunnydale. Dawn stands beside her, then Giles joins
them, as do Xander, Willow, and Faith.
FAITH
Looks like the hellmouth is officially closed for business.
GILES
There is another one in Cleveland. Not to spoil the moment. (bends to pick up a rock and throws it into the
canyon)
XANDER
We saved the world.
WILLOW
We changed the world. (walks up to Buffy’s side) I can feel them, Buffy. All over. Slayers are awakening
everywhere.
DAWN
We’ll have to find them.

WILLOW
We will.
GILES
(paces behind them) Yes, because the mall was actually in Sunnydale, so there’s no hope of going there
tomorrow.
DAWN
We destroyed the mall? I fought on the wrong side.
XANDER
All those shops gone. The Gap, Starbucks, Toys “R” Us. Who will remember all those landmarks unless we tell
the world about them?
GILES
We have a lot of work ahead of us.
FAITH
(to Willow) Can I push him in?
WILLOW
You’ve got my vote.
FAITH
I just want to sleep, yo, for like a week.
DAWN
I guess we all could, if we wanted to.
WILLOW
Yeah. (smiles) The First is scrunched, so… what do you think we should do, Buffy?
FAITH
Yeah, you’re not the one and only chosen anymore. Just gotta live like a person. How’s that feel?
DAWN
Yeah, Buffy. What are we gonna do now?
As the others chatter around her, Buffy just stares straight ahead at the hole formerly known as Sunnydale. As
she contemplates what’s next, she smiles.
Cut to:
Closing credits.
